After I finish my PhD, I want to be FREE.
And I hope to be free to shape my life as I see fit, not what others deem fit for me.

Will the future economy let me? We shall see.

1. Anybody who is anything other than independently wealthy
is a wage slave to Da Man. I don't care what kind of a job you have -- I don't care if you loooooooove your job -- as long as you are working for someone other than yourself, you will never be FREE.

For that matter, as long as you are working, you will never be FREE.

As long as you own anything at all, you will never be FREE.

Want to be FREE? Sell everything you own, break all ties with family and friends, and take to the road. That's freedom. Of course, you're still in a body -- so you can still get sick, be injured, etc.

As long as you're alive, you're not free.

That's just my two cents, of course. :D

2. Unemployment is free as well! However, finishing it up will be a freeing feeling

3. Teach

Get hired by the best University you can, and make it clear you have no desire to be made Dean. Enjoy the love of teaching, and get tenure. Publish a few times a year.

You'll have a blast.

Been there, done that. Worked at AT&T for years and was miserable. NYU saved my life!

7. I Hear You!
It depends on how you see it. AT&T killed my soul. I believe that coming out of that environment gave me a shock that changed how I saw the whole academic system. It can be cutthroat, but it's child's play compared to what I experienced!

Of course, it depends on the University. I've heard my share of horror stories!

9. A university, through my eyes, is a rationalized system that would permit me little freedom.
I want to make my own way through public work.

4. I'm twisting arms on my committee this week. I'm in the homestretch.
The longer it's gone on, the dumber I get!
