1 more WHO thread: Link- WHO's first US performance 1967---
at the Monterray Pop Festival. They are introduced by Eric Burdon, play "Substitute" to an audience of peace and love folk rock fans who are somewhat stunned:

They have ALWAYS been a loose, sloppy and raw stage band, while their studio work is polished by comparison.

Just my 2 cents - I hope some of you actually like this performance.

1. Thanks!
Yesterday's performance was one reason why I don't see the bands of my youth anymore. Prefer to remember this version of the Who...

2. In 1967, I was dropping out of college-for the second time.
We are all a bit older and slower now.

3. Misleading thread title....
The Who's first US performance was not at Monterey Pop.

I saw them in 65 with Herman's Hermits (hated them, got over it).

8. You may be right....

How did I get it wrong and more importantly, how were the Herman's Hermits still headlining in 67? I swore I saw that show in 65. With Donna Butterfield...who was my G/f for the third and fourth grade (65-66).

But then again. I found this:

t took the band a long time to break in this country--their earliest singles only received minimal airplay (they spent one early tour opening for Herman's Hermits!), and they made their first big splash in the States via the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, where they gave Hendrix a run for his money in the live excitement department

6. thanks for reminding everyone or showing younger folks how great they
were.

 They were kind of like the Replacements (better players, though) or Husker DU of their day - can't think of a contemporary rock band comparison at the moment.

7. I thought it was fantastic.
How anyone can doubt that Pete still rocks out loud is beyond me. He said he wouldn't lip sync. Noted that he wasn't an actor and that he needed to be plugged in and hear it to "Catch fire". I thought he burned the place down.

Woof
