Facebook - One "update" closer to becoming irrelevant.
Seriously, what's with all these changes they make that that moves everything around from the way we want it and get use to it?

It reminds me of some business advice I think I read from Peter Lynch the great stock investor. You know a company is having trouble when they start making changes for NO reason. They either hired some new Tech Director who feels like they had to come in and change *something* to put their mark on the site or they just still can't figure out how to make Facebook profitable or something.

I'm done with Facebook! I just can't freakin' figure it out anymore!!!!

1. Okay grandperson...
"Remote control? Who the hell can"t change a channel!"

"Automatic transmission? Who can't shift a car?"
All things I heard my Dad say.

Get used to it, in about five minutes you won't even notice a thing...

2. I appreciate your concern....but your analogy is backward.
Edited on Tue Feb-09-10 10:06 AM by cbdo2007
Imagine you have a remote control and then someone comes along and says "here's a new better remote!" and you look at it and it's exactly the same but everything is exactly reversed. Even the numbers. It's a mirror image of the previous remote. WHY would they do that?

You easily pointed out large fixes to known problems to make things easier, Facebook was working just fine and looked great. We had just gotten use to the new look since their last update a few months ago. There have been plenty of "problem solving" solutions over the years though that DIDN'T catch on though.

And I'm 30 and currently work for an internet company. I'm not some old geezer. :)

4. you know you are right....
it is not as good. The update just happened to me yesterday. but after playing a bit, I too don't like it.

The news feed thing is weird, the buttons don't seem to be right. I like the toolbar on the left with all the stuff and apps...

Why am I getting updates two days old though? I have two on my home page right now from Saturday....

9. Yeah see, it's not an improvement....it's just....weird.
I did browse a few minutes in the Facebook help and the issue has been brought up about updates being a few days old. Then I looked and noticed at the top of the newsfeed it says something about "Top News" and that is selected or you can click on "Most Recent" to see the newer stuff I guess.

How do they know what the "Top News" is? I don't give a flying flanger if 5 of my friends are fans of Subway Meatball Subs but I do want to make useless remarks about their status updates.

14. ...and there's your answer
"Top News" appears sponsor-related. That's the new revenue stream I'll bet, and you'll be force-fed it to the detriment of what you REALLY want to see. Also, I'll bet none of your friends have joined that fanclub, my bet it that Subway and Facebook are punking you.

Throw off your Facebook shackles!

17. Actually.....I made up the "Subway" example. It was really for a local drive in dive place,
Hi-Boy Drive in burgers or something. Now I'm sure they aren't advertising on F-book but it's just annoying.

Or it will say, "Ron Johnson just commented on Brent Hazel's status" - Ok, I'm friends with Ron Johnson but I'm not friends with Brent Hazel so I can't even see the status that my friend commented on, nor do I care since it doesn't have anything to do with ME and I can't participate cause I'm still not friends with Brent Hazel. Ugh!!!

3. This last change has come across as particularly stupid and pointless
WTF is up with the "home" button on the right? Goes against everything I ever learned about Web site design. x(

Right now I'm grappling with the status of my status updates. I'll post one, it'll appear, and then when I refresh the page it'll disappear. But it'll come back four or five refreshes later. I can't tell if they're just disappearing for me, or if they also disappear off my friend's FBs.

Oh yeah, and what is it with the "top news"? How does it decide what's "top" news anyway? And who wants old news? Seems like the live status updates would be preferable.

But what do I know. I'm just their willing victim. :P

6. I don't care about the layout, but the news feed is horribly broken right now.
Posts from my friends disappear from the news feed totally randomly, with no way to fix it except to repeatedly refresh until a different random subset of your friend's posts comes up.

This isn't just bitching over a layout - basic functionality is seriously broken right now.

Borked: To have totally fucked something up. Usually by doing something stupid. Specifically used to describe technology that is broken. (Urbandictionary)

8. One thing that annoys me about Facebook...
...is how difficult it is to easy click to a friend's profile from the home page. There's no display of friend's to click on. And when you click on the Friends icon, it doesn't take you to a list of your friends, but rather a "Find Friends" feature.

To actually get to a list of your friends, you have to click on the Profile link, and then access the list of your friends on your profile page (as it appears to others).

Facebook sucks.

11. Yeah, that's my complaint. They don't seem to know what we want to see.
They just make changes based on what they want to show us not what we actually want to see. That's what makes me think they are making the changes based on some IT director or something and not based on suggestions they are receiving from their users.

Of course, they're a business that is focused on us connecting with hundreds of people so they WANT us to reconnect with more and more people we hardly remember....but yeah, it's nearly impossible now to just find an alphabetical list of my friends with one click. The first click on "Friends" should take you to the alphabetical list with a separate "Find Friends" tab or link or button then at the top of THAT page.

12. I've found that to be the case when I've worked for Web sites
There's a huge disconnect between what the IT folks and management think users want and what users REALLY want. As a content manager, I always acted as an advocate for the users (as I always received the complaining e-mails), but it seems the other folks in charge never listened, in kind of a "we know what's good for the idiotic masses" kind of way. IT folks want to do "cool things" and management wants to make a quick buck. Meanwhile, the people who actually use the site are left twisting in the wind. I strongly suspect it's the same with FB right now. And if they're not careful, someone's going to come along with a better site that serves people's needs much better, and FB will end up high and dry on the trash heap of the Web...and confused as to how they got there.

20. They'll need to have consultants come in and analyze what went wrong,
when pure common sense would tell them that you don't hide things on websites that people want to access on a regular basis. When I hit the Friends button I want my Friends list to come up, not a search box. If there ever was a social networking site with good design and with easy navigation Facebook would be gone in a heartbeat.

25. If you start typing a friend's name in the search box,
their name will pop up in a little drop down window, and you can click it from there.

It does suck out loud... but at least I found that method of navigating the awfulness.

16. Of course, there's always a rumor that FB will start charging for use . . .
I'm wondering if all the new "improvements" are put out there to lure people into paid memberships in the future -- in the hope we'll get disgusted with the current screwed-up functionality and will be willing to cough up some bucks for better service.

You know, "As a Premium Level member, you'll get X . . . "

28. There's a new web interface.
Rearranges some stuff, not for the better in my professional opinion (you now have to click twice to logout, or to see your friend-lists, the notifications got moved to the top of the page instead of on the always-visible toolbar, so you have to scroll to the top to see them, the list of friends available for chat is in two separate places on screen for no apparent reason).

Worst of all, it introduced a very obnoxious bug that causes newer posts from your friends to disappear at random from your news feed - the posts that are visible are usually hours old. In other words, horribly broken, borderline unusable.
