How Long Do You Think It Is Good To Walk Your Dog?
I try to take my dog on two walks a day, but the weather has been so bad we are only getting about 45 minutes a day. My Veterinarian is amazing, but she is so hard on any dogs who are overweight, and my dog is getting his checkup Friday, and he is a bit tubby due to lack of exercise because this winter has been so miserable. I feel guilty.

But I want to create some kind of schedule for both of us, so we get our exercise in.

Is there any kind of excercise you can think of for a dog besides walking and a dog park?

Has anyone tried a treadmill? I have never tried one, but I am really interested in this concept, for both my sweet dog and me.

1. He's a retriever, right?
Do you have a place where he can chase a ball? We throw a ball up and down the hallway when weather is bad, or in the driveway when the grass is unusable (right now we have about 2 feet of snow on it!). If you have access to water, you can use one of those floatable throw toys. He should love that!

Show dogs are usually trained on treadmills, but I've never used one for a dog. We do agility with our dogs --- lots of jumping, climbing, etc. We go to an indoor training facility, so it's lots of fun for them.

You can also cut back on his food a little when he's inactive. Check with the vet to see how much you should feed him.

5. Take him places that you can let him off the leash.
Are there any off-leash dog parks nearby?

I usually just carry the leash and let him run loose, even in places where he is *supposed to* be on a leash. If I see a cop, I just clip it on him really fast.
