And when it blows, there won't be much we can do about it. It's the kind of excitement that only rapture-ready and paranoid end-of-the-world types would relish.

6. Rolling Stones
Don't get me wrong - their earlier work in the 60s-70s was AMAZING. Then they starting putting out schlock sometime in the early 80s and haven't stopped since.

I would assume Led Zeppelin could have turned out like the Rolling Stones had Bonham not died. Although I love "In Through the Out Door" album it was the beginning of the end. The fact that they ceased as a band after Bonham died helped build the legend and kept their music relevant throughout the decades.

34. Stones jumped the shark in the mid-1970s
I would say "It's Only Rock and Roll" was the beginning of their decline. The hit albums "Some Girls" and "Tattoo You" are overrated in my opinion and don't even come close to their 1960s work. They put out great albums in the 1960s and developed a reputation for great concerts, and they have been milking that for 40 years.

49. Perfect analysis!
I think people still go to the Rolling Stones concert because it seems like the thing to say you have done. Because there was once the expectation of these amazing shows they had back in the 60's & 70's but like another poster stated - they're just an oldies band trying to hold on to the glory.

Aeromith also has this same issue.

Bruce is teetering on the edge of becoming that person but he's actually put out high quality albums of recently. U2 could turn out the same way if they don't watch out.

28. The Big Lebowski
I'm sure now I'm on 300 ignore lists. But I'm sorry. That movie did nothing for me. John Waters did the "parade of wacko bit characters" concept in an honest and charming way. "Lebowski" seemed so forced and pretend. I know "Lebowski" is worshipped endlessly on this site, but it just didn't grab me. I gave it a second chance when my neighbors showed it as one of their summer movies in their backyard. Of about 30 people who went, only 4 were left at the end. Go ahead and hate me now and flame away, but I gave "Lebowski" 2 tries and it failed both times.

I walked out of the theater disappointed after the first viewing. Maybe it wasn't what I expected or I was just in the wrong mood for it at the time.

Second time I saw it I thought it was mildly amusing.

By the third time, I was laughing my ass off.

No flames from me...differing personal taste in any art form is just a part of life I accepted long ago.

203. Now I'm busted.
It's like he's talking directly to me. I really wanted to like "The Big Lebowski" as it was the Coen Brothers' film and all that, and I "got" the premise of it, and I always enjoy John Goodman, but I just did not like Jeff Bridges in it, and the constant parade of useless "bit" characters that served no purpose kept driving me away from the film. As I said above, I would be willing to sit down with a group of fans of the film and watch it again, then maybe I would finally "get it" in the full sense.

36. Yellowstone is somewhat overrated, I'd have to agree.
We finally went there in September 2008 for 4 days after my sister raving about it. Yes, it was interesting and pretty and unusual, and I enjoyed it. But considering the time and distance and expense of getting there and staying there, I would say it really wasn't worth it when all those factors are considered. There was a LOT of driving, because the park is so big, it seems like we drove and drove and drove. Old Faithful was a major disappointment, it was much smaller and less impressive than I expected. Mammoth Hot Springs was boring. Roaring Mountain made no sound at all. I did enjoy seeing a lot of the brilliantly colored pools, being up close to the smaller geysers and the mud pots and all that. I did enjoy the lesser-known areas such as Black Sand Basin, the Sapphire Pool and other spots which were just as pretty and interesting but less crowded. I actually enjoyed Grand Teton National Park a bit more than Yellowstone, though we were there at the perfect time for the aspens turning color. I'm glad I went to Yellowstone once, but I feel no desire to go there again. I could go to Yosemite every year and never get tired of it.

I worked at Yellowstone, and went backpacking, which is the key. As soon as we were 50 feet up the trail, no more tourists. Most step out only a few feet from their motorhomes. We went to hot spring areas out in the wild, and soaked in the thermal creeks. A fantastic trip I will never forget, and it happened 30 years ago.

Most of Yellowstone is wilderness, and that is where the beauty lies.

The named features are nice, but it would be great to just sit and gaze at a small, turquoise-colored hot pool with no name and nobody else around, all day long.

50. The Tsunami that was suppose to hit Hawaii after the 8.8 Earthquake in Chile
The news so wanted it to be another scenario like what happened in Southeast Asia after Xmas a few years back (took alot of folks by suprise) but instead they just gave us Al Capone's Vault type letdown. I still can't believe the News (and for that matter myself) devoted hours that afternoon hoping to have a Tsunami break and all they got was some decent surf waves. I still recall CNN calling some guy walking on the beach an "idiot" - thing is, it was CNN and all the other Cable news outlets that ended up being an idiot.

75. That was a legitimate warning
An earthquake in Chile back in 1960 DID trigger a massive tsunami (35 foot wave) that leveled downtown Hilo and killed 61 people. It would have been more had the technology not existed yet for a warning system.

An earthquake in Alaska in 1946 killed 170 Hawaiians.

There were others too, including one in 1975.

It's not an exact science predicting a tsunami. After what happened in Indonesia, it is worth the hype. Yes, the media is annoying, but had 1946 or 1960 happened all over again, who would be saying that now? Do we fault the media for overhyping Katrina? Nope - because Katrina earned it and then some.

But I expect as much from east coasters who know nothing about earthquakes or tsunamis and have never experienced either.

80. I'm not saying the warning wasn't legitimate
What was a travesty was the cable news spending 5 hours covering nothing but the Tsunami because their expectations was that there would be some serious distruction. And this was BEFORE the thing was to hit Hawaii

57. Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, a.k.a. Mother Theresa.
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 12:14 PM by Deep13
Hang on, let me get dressed.

Okay, all ready.

What I have read and heard leads me to believe that she was primarily interested in promoting her monastic order, not actual charity. The bulk of the money she raised was not for charity but for the R.C. Church itself. The Vatican frequently used her as the public face of Catholicism to promote its political agenda. For example she went to Ireland in the 1990s to campaign against a law that would allow divorce for people who were subject to domestic violence.

She also was a great believer in the redemptive power of suffering. Here hostel was called the Home for the Dying, not the Hospital for the Seriously Ill. This is more than semantics. It was NOT a medical facility and made very limited if any attempt at actual treatment for illness. Bojaxhiu personally found religious affirmation in watching people suffer and minimally caring for them, an attitude that can only be described as sadistic.

Like every other public figure, everything we know about her is from media reports. As is often the case, most if not all of what we know about her is wrong. Nevertheless, actual information is available and it paints a far less flattering picture than the gushing media has.

175. I've got no real major problem with Disneyland.
1. Disneyland isn't made up to be equal with all things worth visiting in California, or even the LA area. It's just Disneyland. Disney World, on the other hand, has been pimped out by tourism folks as the main reason for visiting Florida, which is just an insult to this incredible state of mine. There are so many other places in Florida that are just as worth visiting as Disney World, if not moreso. Pristine beaches, the just amazingly beautiful natural springs, the Everglades, St. Augustine, the Ocala National Forest, the Keys--these are all places that deserve just as much attention from people visiting Florida as Disney World.

2. Disneyland was built in a contained space in an already developed area. The impact to urban sprawl was minimal, since sprawl was already there. The effect Disney World had on Central Florida was much different. Orlando was a sleepy smaller city surrounded by pristine woodlands, lakes and wilderness. Along came Disney World and that all got ripped apart--not necessarily by the park itself, but by the thousands of hotels and restaraunts and tshirt shops that got built immediately surrounding the park to accommodate all the tourists.

3. As far as I know, Disney didn't subvert the normal building and development codes when building Disneyland. On the other hand, Disney stealthly started to buy up land in Central Florida at a cheap price without announcing their plans, then turned around and solicited from the Florida legislature special exemptions for normal building and development codes that everyone else had to follow.

62. Yellowstone???
That entire ecosystem alone is one of the most fragile and beautiful in the world, and the geological wonders are just a bonus. There is SO MUCH MORE to it than one geyser. The pools, the mudpots, the terraces... makes me wish I was a geologist at times.

And those bison! LOVE those animals like few others.

One of the most sublime moments in my life was in May 1999, when I stood in view of the 'Grand Canyon' of the Yellowstone, watching the lower falls, as snow fell and bison foraged only 20 feet away. It was a primal, breathtaking scene.

Proud member of The Greater Yellowstone Coalition, and passionate defender of the wildlife and scenery of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.

72. As with most places, the timing of your visit greatly affects your experience
Almost any place in the world is better when it's uncrowded. Long lines and excessive noise (from people, radios and cars) can ruin any place. Seasons and the vagaries of weather also factor in. A lot of the sublime experiences like the one you described have the element of being in the right place at the right time.

I'm glad I went there once, though honestly I don't feel any desire to go there again, but maybe 20 years from now I will want to revisit. Since I live in San Diego, it was a long way to go, and it was worth it once, but to go there again doesn't seem worth it to me. I can drive to Yosemite in 8 hours and to me that seems to be a much bigger payoff vs. the time, effort and expense involved. But Yellowstone is certainly a unique place in the world and I'm very glad it is preserved.

76. I only go to Yellowstone in the spring or fall
NEVER in the summer. WAY too crowded, as you say. I think it's an easy flight to Billings from LAX - usually through SLC. My parents used to live in Cody, only 50 miles from Yellowstone. So after staying at their place for a few days, hitting the road to Yellowstone was easy. Plus, they knew lots of great backroads around the south fork of the Shoshone River, and there are some incredible vistas unknown to mainstream tourists.

Been there 4 times, and see something different each time. The most surreal was 9/11. I was actually there that day (my Dad's 60th birthday, so the trip was pre-planned for months). Couldn't have been clearer or more tranquil, and so far removed from the tragedy enveloping the news.

131. Yeah, I agree
Yellowstone is among my favorite places on earth. I can see thinking that Old Faithful is overrated, I suppose, but as you say there's so much more. And while it's super crowded in the summer months, it's still possible to find quiet, isolated, beautiful places. I've been there on July 4th weekend, and the main features were packed, sure, but even we were able to find a number of great features and places that were nearly or completely devoid of people. Of course, it's even better when it isn't packed. I wish I still lived close enough to visit regularly.

64. Citizen Kane.
Sorry to push everybody so far into the past, and a thousand pardons to "cinema" buffs, but I have tried to watch Citizen Kane three times now and I cannot bear it.
Self consciously arty to the point of silliness. And I find Orson Welles and most of the cast repellant.
So there.

I haven't seen The Hurt Locker. I haven't seen Yellowstone. I haven't even seen Titanic.

But, hey....Johnny Cash's voice is amazing. All the hurt and weariness in the world is in that voice. And he's singing every song directly to me. (Just me.) That's a kind of genius.

89. 'Citizen Kane' was technicaly influential
Revolutionary and unprecedented camera angles, cinematography, the narrative, etc. In other words, it wasn't so much the story (the vaunted 'Rosebud' aspect aside) as the technical aspect. It influenced a massive amount of movies in its wake, even unto this day. Sometimes I catch glimpses of Kane in ALL kinds of movies, and I bet 50% of the time, the director doesn't even realize he stole a concept from that film, but rather, from another imitator.

One thing that was shocking about it in its time that is lost today was the balls of taking on the Hearst family. It has faded from national memory, but Welles really took a big chance, risking his financial anc creative livelihood. These days, very few people take risks creatively in the film business. For that alone, Kane deserves its accolades.

is to listen to the commentary by Roger Ebert while watching. It's like attending a film seminar. His commentary for Casablanca is awesome, too. I have a fairly new standard-def TV that I'm not in a hurry to replace as long as it's working well. HD is nice, but to me, not a big enough improvement to rush out and buy a new TV.

As to Tarantino, I just haven't been that impressed with his movies.

171. I can understand that. I bought my 42" LCD TV for a steal at $1800
A better TV goes for less than half of that today, of course, I've been using it for over two years now. I recently bought a very nice 32" TV for my bedroom for $350 at Costco, it blows the 42" TV away in performance. Things always get cheaper.

As for Quentin Tarantino, From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill (1), and Inglourious Basterds do it for me.

I have always said that when it comes to long-running deliberately dunderheaded bands who rewrite the same song over and over, I'll take AC/DC over the Ramones any day.
It is a bummer whenever I remember that 3/4 of the original lineup is dead, though.

129. Agreed with much on your list MVD
:hi:
Can't comment on warm, snowless winters because those are the only kind I've ever experienced here in Australia (cold by our standards but presumably warm by American standards) and I don't know who Daughtry and Joanna Newsom are. I also haven't seen the Dark Knight, although I know it has received much publicity

But all the others yes. Sandra Bullock seems like a very nice and compassionate person but, considering the number of movies I've seen her in, I've never really rated her highly as an actress

I just feel outnumbered liking snowy winters.. that's why I like to go on certain weather boards during the winter. Agree about Sandra being nice, but I find her stiff as an actress. :hi:

Daughtry was on American Idol, and Joanna Newsom is also a singer - a critics' fave that I just don't get.

Joe Lieberman, Benjamin Nelson, Blanche Lincoln, Evan Bayh -see entry for Blue Dog Democrats
Rahm Emmanuel -Strangely enough from both sides of the debate. I think his political abilities are overrated but, on the other hand, I find the hatred and vitriol being directed against him overrated as well
Friends
Sex and the City
Grey's Anatomy
Ronald Reagan
The Oscars and most other award shows.
That '70s' Show
The Brady Bunch
Celine Dion
Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake et all
Dennis Miller -the fact that anyone takes him seriously is amazing

I can't stand people who sing with a clothespin on their nose. And whine. And are out of tune. I don't know their names, but they are bad.

I do not want to listen to a laundry list of "my pickup got repo'ed, my coon dawg ran off, my woman ran off with another man, the boss fired me, my momma tells me to pick up my clothes off the floor and wash 'em.....etc".

Willie is good. Dolly Parton has a beautiful voice and DOES NOT WHINE.

Heavy metal. Led Zep (Did not like them in 1969 either). Metallica.

Charlotte Church (too nasal). Andrea Bocelli - he's not an opera singer, he does not have the technique for it.

Rap and hip hop.

Professional sports. College sports. High school sports.

Jeff Daniels the ventriloquist.

Bob Hope. Quentin Tarantino movies. Anything with no plot and tons of violence and threats, like The Dark Knight.

None.

I could name thousands of diseases that at statistically more significant that don't receive anywhere near the hype. Hell, you have a greater chance of becoming infected with Lyme Disease than any one of those diseases. Auto-erotic asphyxiation kills as many or more people a year than SARS. You don't hear apocalyptic reports of Lyme Disease or AEA in the media though.

Like it or not, those diseases were not worth the hype.

173. HDTV, the movie Goodfellas
I've seen HDTV....it's the exact same thing I can see on regular TV, except the resolution is better. Big whoop....not worth spending the extra $1000, at least not right now.

What really burns me are supposed "sports fans" who turn in their season tickets because they just bought an HDTV and they think the experience is just as good as being there in person. Trust me, it's not. Having the chance to be at the stadium if something historic happens during the game as opposed to watching it on TV, albiet one with better resolution? That's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard.

As for Goodfellas? Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad movie in and of itself. And yes, it is based on a true story and we know in real life mobsters are just plain scum, and there's little if anything romantic about the lifestyle. But if I'm watching a movie, I want to at least have something to like or identify with the characters. There was no real sympathetic characters in Goodfellas whatsoever, not even Henry Hill or his wife. I'm sorry, give me a Tony Soprano or a Michael Corleone over a Henry Hill any day. I like a bit of moral ambiguity in my mobster stories.

He is making a weak comparison of a Catholic 'philosopher' to a TV talk show host who happens to be an atheist. It's a cheap way of bashing atheism, or should I say an intellectually dishonest one? Hence my Bertrand Russell/Richard Dawkins comment below. Thomas Aquinas wasted all that intellectual energy defending the existence of a Bronze Age Best-Friend-In-The-Sky, and all the dogmatic baggage that goes with it. Hell, Bill Maher still beats that, come to think of it, lol.

I didn't see any indignation over the hit-and-run attacks on Mother Theresa. But that's typical of a certain sort of "open-minded intellectual". Simply smirk and trot out "magical man in the sky" and sit back, content to wallow in your own smug superiority.

Nothing intellectually dishonest about that...

223. Mother Theresa hoarded donated money instead of spending it on the dying or the care of the sisters
of her order. As a result, she caused a great deal of entirely preventable human misery, because she had some very outdated ideas about improving people through physical misery.

That's only tangentially a criticism of Catholicism, and primarily a criticism of her being a deeply messed up person who should never have been in shouting distance of responsibility.
