Lady Gaga: I've decided that I like her
There were postings about her on DU recently. So I decided to listen to more of her music than I had previously heard, and I've decided now that I really like her!

Speechless is an awesome song! And the beat to "Show Me Your Teeth" is just pretty darn cool!

1. I like her too
I do think she's very overrated though. She's not really doing anything particularly different or innovative but it's enjoyable music. I don't like "Speechless" and "Teeth" is ok. My favorites are Poker Face, Paparazzi, and Bad Romance. I also like "Telephone" but Beyonce ruins the middle of the song.

I saw the video one morning, and that song was stuck in my head for two days!! ha ha

That's part of what got me to listen to more of her stuff.

Campy man-on-man vampire action that's just a little bit hot.

9. Not a big fan myself.
I find her lyrics are stupid and song structures boring and simplistic. I guess whatever gets people to dance doesn't have to require much thought.

She may be this amazingly talented classically-trained musician, but her songs don't really show it.

20. I totally disagree, but that's okay.
Different strokes for different folks.

It's hard sometimes for old farts like me to understand her lyrics, but once I did, I found them to be pretty deep.

I hope she has a long and interesting career like Madonna. I will follow her with interest, at least for awhile.

14. I have no idea whether or not I like her. Why?
Because her voice is so autotuned in all her songs, and she goes absolutely too crazy on her distracting outfits, that's it's just too hard to see whether or not she's actually a talented singer. She might very well be--I don't know.

21. Her voice talent is readily apparent in Speechless.
If you've not listened to that particular song, I urge you to give it a second chance. It's the one with the least techno accompanyment. And there are videos where she does it pretty much piano and voice.

The voice definitely has strength.

26. You nailed that,
and identified much of why many folks don't understand or like Lady Gaga. I love her. She's a young artist with a great voice, an intriguing vision and the clout by now to give the finger to folks who want to write her off as a gimmick. She's a smart woman and, like I said, I love her. :)

P.S. If there is a "God," s/he doesn't hate anyone, much less this exquisite, artistic creature s/he created.

She is good at what she does, but I don't see anything original in it.

24. Mrs mitchum: "When I see her all I think about is how much that shit she is wearing...
costs. Buying couture is not a sign of creativity. They are going to try to hype her like Bowie, but there are some major differences. Bowie has way more talent and vision. He also influenced fashion and style, rather than being influenced BY fashion and style. She's just a consumer for consumers"

I love Mrs mitchum.

30. Gaga's handlers are really going to be pushing the Bowie thing...
"He was someone who was initially dismissed as a gimmicky freak, but he endured. Gaga will do the same!"
Sorry, but there is a world of difference between the two.

31. eh, as much as I love Bowie
there are a LOT of parallels. First off, Bowie was following quite a few trends throughout his whole career, actually, and like Madonna, he was good at presenting the underground stuff to a wider audience. Also, a friend of mine works for Lady Gaga doing costume work, and there are a lot of cool things going on there, imo, and find her visual approach refreshing and even kinda gutsy as a lot of people don't see past the gimmick, and in fact tend to reject an obvious visual gimmick over a more subtle one (jeans and a T-shirt are just as thought out and marketed, but come across as being more real. It's still an image used like any other).

I don't think her music is as good as Bowie's but I have to give her props for being talented and knowing how to market herself in a world of Disney clones and hipsters. As an artist and musician myself, that is far more easily said than done, and a LOT of people have been less successful at it. I think people sometimes write pop music off as all being the same, but I disagree wholeheartedly.

even though there are LOTS of parallels

Gaga is just a schlocky hag act for this era of diminished expectations

40. bowie looked to influences like mime, kabuki theater, german fascism, kabbalah
(30 years before it reached media consciousness), satanism, and was a voluminous reader--among other things. highly literate, with profound wit.

they don't even reside in the same universe.

39. the marketing is profoundly effective
you cannot become bowie by emulating bowie, just like most modern music cannot be kraftwerk by emulating kraftwerk.

the names of the bands and musical styles are limitless, but most music made after the 70s is just rehashed/copped bowie or kraftwerk.

33. I like her.
Pop music is not SRS BZNS. There's room for the critic's-darling stuff, and there's also room for pop that's all about the glitz and glamor and fun. (There's more to Lady Gaga than that, but there's nothing wrong with appreciating her on that level.)

I'm not usually a fan of dance-pop. What makes her stand out for me? Wit.

36. She was on Jonathan Ross tonight.
Did two songs. Hated the first one. Something about brown or blue eyes. Stupid outfit. The second song I was all set to hate, but I liked her interview between the two performances. I cursed my foot for tapping along to some song about not calling her phone anymore.

AND, she didn't lip sync (+1000) and she really put on a good show.

38. I thought she was just a gimmick
my daughter played one of her videos, and I begrudgingly began to admit she may have some talent. Then a thread a few weeks ago over in Entertainment mentioned Bad Romance, so on a lark I decided to buy it. Wow.

I now like her. I don't like any of her other stuff quite as much as I like Bad Romance, but she's definitely talented.
