I mean SERIOUSLY, how much of a big WHOOP is it for you to have "The Shining" if it can't save you from a friggin' FIRE AXE to the CHEST?

Gimme a friggin' BREAK.

Discuss, DAMMIT.

1. I think he meant to protect the little boy.
Whatever the kid's name was.

2. Danny...I'm watching it right now.
That's true, so I guess the assumption is that:

1). He "saw" danger for Danny and that was his only priority

2). He "saw" danger for Danny but not himself

3). He "saw" danger for Danny AND himself but felt that he had to save him anyway

I dunno...if it were ME, and I met Nicholson for the first time, and I knew he was gonna kill my ass, I would have taken some precautionary measures. That's why I get the impression that the "Shining" may not be all it's cracked up to be.

3. That's because Nicholson was miscast. You knew Jack was crazy from the start.
Casting Steven Weber as Torrance in the TV-movie made more sense. He was more of a likable everyguy who is slowly driven mad by the hotel.

4. That's true...
...that scene early in the film, when the guy in charge of the Overlook walks up and asks him if he'd been waiting long and Nicholson says "Not at all, it gave me time to get something to eat" I immediately thought of "I want you to hold the chicken between your KNEES..."

6. No way! Kubrick's version was pure genius, including Jack Nicholson.
Stephen King's version was not as good.

7. Interview of Kubrick by Michel Ciment on the Shining
"If Danny had perfect ESP, there could be no story. He would anticipate everything, warn everybody and solve every problem. So his perception of the paranormal must be imperfect and fragmentary. This also happens to be consistent with most of the reports of telepathic experiences. The same applies to Hallorann. One of the ironies in the story is that you have people who can see the past and the future and have telepathic contact, but the telephone and the short-wave radio don't work, and the snowbound mountain roads are impassable. Failure of communication is a theme which runs through a number of my films."

8. Maybe he "knew" that if he went there
Danny would be okay, but he didn't know how that would happen.

Though he didn't know it would mean his own death, he nevertheless saved Danny.
