My folks had just retired out here and I was visiting for the first time. At the time,
they lived in this condo complex which was kind of an oasis smack dab in the middle
of hardcore Sonoran desert terrain.

Near midnight, GOOD pot brownie, laying back in the hot tub with headphones and a
great slow, near subsonic bass electronica tape made for me by a friend with notes
that lingered FOREVER -- very broody, moody, dark stuff.

Thinking about where I am. Thinking that if I were camping and in a sleeping bag,
rattlesnakes could probably sense my body heat from 50-100 yards away and come
over to snuggle up and get warm.

Pot and music and situation combine to cause HYPER-paranoia. If the above is the
case, they're sensing the heat of the hot tub from a 1/2 mile around and coming
over to snuggle in DROVES.

I ease the headphones off my head and sit there, terrified, for several minutes...
tense as any highly paranoid stoned man in a hot tub can be.

Suddenly, I started laughing -- real barking gut-level stuff.
.
The paranoid mood had broken the instant I realized that I had taken off the
headphones so that I could hear the thundering herd of rattlesnakes slithering
up behind me.
.
I put the headphones back on... and the rebound relaxation was one of the best
times I've ever spent in a hot tub.
