Police: Man tried to revive dead possum; alcohol involved
<snip>
Police said a man will be charged with public drunkenness after a witnesses saw him attempting mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a road-killed opossum.

State police said they charged Donald Wolfe, 55, of Brookville, Jefferson County, after they arrived at the scene on Route 36 in Oliver Township around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Trooper Jamie Levier said several witnesses saw Mr. Wolfe near the animal. The trooper said one person saw Mr. Wolfe kneeling before the animal and gesturing as though he were conducting a seance, while another saw the mouth-to-mouth attempt.

Trooper Levier said Wolfe was "extremely intoxicated" and "did have his mouth in the area of the animal's mouth, I guess."

4. See, that won't get you on the news. Gotta be drunk or something.
You need a twist, an angle. Mouthing a possum is just not enough, in and of itself.

5. Guy's lucky the opossum was dead.
An opossum just "playing dead" could have done some serious damage to his face.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opossum

Opossums will eat rattlesnakes. They're not much affected by the venom, and they don't much pay attention to bites. (Older male opossums can be especially gruesome looking, their faces so scarred from fighting one another.) So an opossum will just walk up and start crunching away on the poor snake. Rattlesnakes expect other animals will avoid them, that's why they have rattles.

9. Possums, like most every creature will try to intimidate you.
But, once you make it clear that you're not intimidated and are quite able/willing to bring a much greater level of violence to the situation they calm right down.

I carry an axe handle, a handgun, and a camera. I almost always find a combination that allows a photo.

10. Awww. Very cute photo!
We get them in the hen house on occasion and spend considerable time chasing them out because we don't want to kill them.

They do have nasty looking claws, tho. :scared:

I always love your photos. :hi:

13. You're very kind.
I hope that I didn't give the impression that I wish these creatures any harm. But, I find that when properly armed I walk with confidence and the creatures sense that. Consequently, they are much less prone to want a fight, I get my photo, and am on my way.

12. The fierce cat food stealing 'possums are fun.
I was at a party once where everybody was stoned on one substance or another when a big male opossum, one of the most scarred and ugliest I've ever seen, walked into the room looking for the cat food.

Some people were freaking out, but I was one of the people laughing. He took some convincing, showing his teeth at times, but eventually we pushed him out the front door.

I'm certain a few people at the party remember how they were hallucinating and saw Satan's pet rat.

17. A couple of winters ago
on a bitterly cold night (well below 0 F.) I went out to the barn to check on the cats. When I looked in the heated house that I had built for them I was surprised to see that there was a possum in with them. The cats didn't look very happy about it, but the possum was behaving itself and the look it gave me was one of "mister it's so miserably cold outside." I couldn't bring myself to throw it out so I just went back in the house. When I checked the next day it was gone, but from time to time I noticed that the cats would eat a lot more than usual.

Another night when I went out to check on the cats there was three raccoons that had decided to make themselves at home. But, in this case rather than be pleasant they decided to try intimidating me. I will not be threaten by any creature large or small, four legged or two legged in my own damned home. The only reason they got away with their skins is because (1) I didn't want to risk shooting a hole in one of my vehicles or the side of the barn, (2) I had neglected to close the door behind myself on the way in, and (3) I'm getting older thus slower. However, once I had an axe in hand it didn't take long for them to decide to find other accommodations.

20. Thank you.
I very much appreciate the kind words.

The poor creature was so surprised that it just sit there. Apparently, once it got under the Spruce trees it thought that it was completely safe. Then this old, fat man shimmied under on his belly and shoved a camera in its face.

Nobody got hurt and I got my photo. All is well.
