Which musical artist's catalogs aren't bad, but just OK?

1. Eric Clapton.
Great player. Had a few absolute gems through the years. But most of his songs?

Major meh.

2. Your argument is derailed by "Derek and the Dominoes"
Otherwise, I would agree

Also add "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

4. Ah but that's not his catalog
And to be fair, his playing on Layla (the best solos are his - Duane is doing counter-melody on this one) is one of the best solos in the world

5. Absolutely. And Gently Weeps. And Cream. Really, as I said, he's a masterful
player. It's just that many of his songs are just...boring. Uninspired. And his singing leaves much to be desired.

6. Thing is I am talking about an "artist's" total catalog
And even some of his solo songs are better than most - "Let it Rain" for example

But take "The Eagles" and all of their songs are OK - but not great

Same with "Fleetwood Mac"

You'd listen to them, but not all the time. Not like a Velvet Underground, David Bowie or Beatles album.

10. Thriller is also excellent, and Bad is not bad at all
His most recent stuff would qualify IMO.

9. Have to disagree on those last three - great stuff IMO
Just ok? I guess Ani DiFranco, even though she has some good political messages. I'm sure I could think of many more..

14. Gotta high-five you on the Mott choice.
It's always been a band I thought I "should" like, but the reality is that I like Ian Hunter's solo career a lot more. I have the two-CD retrospective "The Ballad of Mott" and have tried to make a one-CD mix of it and couldn't, without cheating and adding some Hunter solo tracks. Way too many for what was supposed to be a "Best Of Mott The Hoople."

:toast:

17. I have never been able to sell Mrs mitchum on Ian Hunter...
I don't get it. She really likes "similar" artists such as Warren Zevon, Dan Baird, Ray Davies, Paul Westerberg
???
Like you, I find his solo work consistently stronger than the work with Mott

15. Rush.
Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 04:16 PM by Tommy_Carcetti
Seriously, for all the Rush topics on here I'm entirely neutral on Rush, neither love them or hate them.

Actually, Freewill is pretty bad ass musically (maybe not lyrically), but the rest of Rush is just sort of "meh" to me.

But they certainly deserve to be in the R&R HOF more than fucking ABBA does.

16. R.E.M.
They blew their load on the "Green" album. Everything after that is pretty much garbage.
