Pretty fucking creepy.
Edited on Mon Apr-12-10 11:21 PM by Orrex
So My Good Babushka and I were watching tonight's episode of House, which we taped because 8:00PM is the children's bedtime hour. About halfway through the show, we heard an eerie and high-pitched voice issuing from somewhere in the adjacent room. It sounded kind of like the man-headed bug trapped in the web at the end of The Fly, and it said something like "waah-wuh-WAAAH," but much more quietly.

MGB and I exchanged a look that said simultaneously "did you hear that?" and "what the fuck was it?" With a few moments' thought we realized that it was probably the one of the boys' Bob the Builder toys, which we keep in a bag in the aforementioned room. You press a button, and the toys squeak out one of the characters' signature lines. Mystery solved.

Well, of course that doesn't explain why it spoke up on its own, nor why it said "waah-wuh-WAAAH" instead of (for instance) "Rockin' and Rollin'" or the like.

So now it's three hours later, and I'm the only one awake and/or downstairs, and every so often the damn thing pipes up again. But now I'm two rooms away, so it's an even more vague and even more disembodied squeaking. I even went into that room, switched on the light, and gave the bag a little kick to see if I could trigger the noise, but I was unsuccessful. After a few seconds I shrugged dramatically, turned off the light, and headed back to the computer.

I was about halfway there when I heard "waah-wuh-WAAAH" wafting from The Mysterious Room.

Pretty creepy, even though I know what it is. Perhaps I'll soak the bag in holy water overnight. Or corn syrup. Whatever I can get my hands on...

1. It's possessed!
:)

I thought a "Babushka" was a head scarf? Or am I mistaken and this is an inside joke?

5. Oh....I see...LOL
When I saw "Babushka" all that came to mind is what my Grandmother wears.

Kill the toy, it may "move" to the side of your bed tonight. :scared:

7. Babushka means both headscarf and grandmother or older woman in Russian.
Because, ya know, that's what grannies wear ...

4. One of our Christmas decorations is a stuffed Santa toy that speaks when you squeeze its hand.
One night I was out in the kitchen and kept hearing, in a booming voice, "the spirit of Christmas lies in your heart..."

Could not figure out WHAT THE FUCK IT WAS. Finally, after searching the entire living room, I realized it was the Santa.

Don't know why it kept going off...but damn.

8. One year, I was given...
.
...a pair of Christmas socks -- cool red and green and Christmas trees
and snowmen all over them.
.
They each had one of those greeting card doohickeys in them where when
you pushed the button, a really cheesy midi version of a Christmas Carol
would play one verse and stop.
.
My sister's place in Connecticut. I had put them on earlier for my niece
and nephew (my bequestors -- one year they also gave me cool Christmas
boxer shorts, but that's another story involving dropping trou onstage
during a gig). I had forgotten that I had them on. Cocktail party going
with some fairly wealthy, influential folks, friends and business associates
of my sister and brother-in-law. I accidentally kick one of the sockbuttons
during a lull in the party and the carol starts its cheesy refrain.
.
And... just... will... not... STOP.
.
Luckily, no one could pinpoint the direction of the sound.
.
Rather than leave the room and be identified as the big ol' goober with
the big ol' goober socks, I hung out and, along with everyone else, just
looked around puzzled and wondered aloud where the heck that music
was coming from.
.
Musta gone on for 10-12 verses or more.
.
Got more and more fun as it went along.
.
