So My Good Babushka and I were watching tonight's episode of House, which we taped because 8:00PM is the children's bedtime hour. About halfway through the show, we heard an eerie and high-pitched voice issuing from somewhere in the adjacent room. It sounded kind of like the man-headed bug trapped in the web at the end of The Fly, and it said something like "waah-wuh-WAAAH," but much more quietly.
MGB and I exchanged a look that said simultaneously "did you hear that?" and "what the fuck was it?" With a few moments' thought we realized that it was probably the one of the boys' Bob the Builder toys, which we keep in a bag in the aforementioned room. You press a button, and the toys squeak out one of the characters' signature lines. Mystery solved.
Well, of course that doesn't explain why it spoke up on its own, nor why it said "waah-wuh-WAAAH" instead of (for instance) "Rockin' and Rollin'" or the like.
So now it's three hours later, and I'm the only one awake and/or downstairs, and every so often the damn thing pipes up again. But now I'm two rooms away, so it's an even more vague and even more disembodied squeaking. I even went into that room, switched on the light, and gave the bag a little kick to see if I could trigger the noise, but I was unsuccessful. After a few seconds I shrugged dramatically, turned off the light, and headed back to the computer.
I was about halfway there when I heard "waah-wuh-WAAAH" wafting from The Mysterious Room.
Pretty creepy, even though I know what it is. Perhaps I'll soak the bag in holy water overnight. Or corn syrup. Whatever I can get my hands on...
