When driving on a three-lane road, where the center lane is exclusively for turns...
Why the hell do people wait until they're directly next to their turn-target (the gas station or Starbucks or whatever) before moving into the center lane?

They slow down for a full block before they actually make the shift mind you, and more often than not they'll have their turn signal on. But somehow they just can't seem to commit to moving those 15 feet to the left.

It's because of things like this that I regret getting rid of my roof-mounted .50 cal autocannon.

1. According to some 'expert' I read...
Center turn lanes are the most dangerous, accident causing changes to our traffic.
I believe it.

3. Out here they call it "The Idiot Lane"...
...which could explain why people avoid it.

10. We call it the suicide lane (IIRC, even my drivers' ed teacher called it that)
As far as the OP goes, it's a lot better to enter the suicide lane too late than too early; I'm more annoyed by people who delay moving to the curb for a right turn, because that move is safer for all concerned...

4. having lived a lot in areas where these stupid ass head on collision lanes exist
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 07:00 PM by pitohui
are you seriously asking why? they do this because they would like to live

i have seen as many as four accidents in less than 30 minutes in the head on collision lane

people are cautious because they would like to live -- why put yourself in harm's way a moment before needs must?

6. I'm pretty sure you are more likely to cause an accident by
getting over at the last minute. It is a dumb and dangerous move many times. It is wreckless.

11. I disagree - moving over too early can lead oncoming traffic to think you're
going left a lot earlier than you are. If they then move into it to make their own left turn ... it becomes the opposite of wreck-less. :)

21. That would be my answer too, except...
I've seen these shitforbrains wait till the last second to get over when there is no chance that anyone coming the other direciton will be turning the other way. There is nowhere to turn on the other side, just fence and open field, yet still with the waiting till right before the turn to get over.

So ... a lot of the time it is indeed just the usual ubiquitous idiocy.

That's my answer to most everything involving questions of "Why do people do such and such stupid dipshit things?"

Because they're fucking dumb.

9. The MAIN reason for situations ...such as you describe...is because any god-damn..
...stupid brain-dead idiot can get a license.

The driving test in just about any state is ridiculously simple and tailored for the average non-thinking individual.

You think I'm being to harsh ??

Really pay attention to the way most people drive the next time you're on the road.. They drive like I fuck..No system at all. :)

12. Tucson had some main arteries...
.
...with those center-turn lanes (they were usually 5-lane roads).
.
They were rightfully and righteously called suicide lanes because
during rush-hour traffic, you could not use them to turn -- they
were used as a third lane to get out of or get into town (depending
on the time of business day) from like 4-6 PM.
.
People would not notice the poor signage they had up to indicate
this nasty practice, or they would forget and move over to turn or
they would be out-of-towners (LOTS of those in Tucson) so there
were PLENTY of opportunities for SERIOUS head-on collisions.
.
Finally did away with them within the last decade sometime -- don't
know how many seriously injured or killed for some FUCKING MORON'S
idea of a traffic-flow "solution".
.

.

19. That's why we have turning lanes in the first place.
Around here we have low speed limits, wide, flat concrete roads and not a lot of hills. Somehow, people still manage to hit each other. Back in central and western MA, we had dirt roads barely wide enough for two cars to get past each other. We'd put an inch of asphalt over it (which got damaged by tree roots and frost every year) and call it a 45 m.p.h. zone.

(go figure, i have never been) so that might be one reason someone slows to a stop, lol, before getting over to turn. question solved.

18. It's in case someone coming the other way...
...enters the center lane. Then there would be two cars, neither at its turning destinination blocking each other.

Back East we did not have turning lanes. One simply pulled to the center of the road and those behind simply drove around on the right.
