But I've been in it many times in warmer months. I'm still alive. Its really quite clean. That being said, I would probably not want to swim below Blue Plains right after a major rainstorm.
The worst pollutant in the Potomac is the PCB-soaked mud. So don't drink the mud on the bottom. If you don't do that and you don't already have a severely compromised immune system, you should be fine.
I would be careful about going below the Anacostia, however, since it is very polluted and you have a notoriously ineffective sewage treatment plant right at its mouth.
near the WV panhandle and Harpers Ferry, and in the headwaters further upstream in WV. Especially relaxing on those blistering hot summer days.
Don't know if I would swim downstream near the DC though.
I saw an auction on eBay a while back where someone was offering to pour the auction winner's urine in the Potomac near DC to get back at Congress and the Federal Bureaucrats, or at least the ones who don't drink bottled water...
