Oh my Christ, the new Robin Hood movie looks even worse than the last (Costner) one
and that's really saying someting.

Just saw a preview/advert on the tellie for the new Robin Hood movie.

Like so many modern movies, the film quality (meaning, literally, the quality of the actual film (or digital film)) looks fucking amazing.

But the quality of the actual movie - the script, the acting, the directing - looks positively cliche. Even worse than cliche.

Which is too bad.

It would be wonderful to get a Robin Hood movie, one of these decades, that was actually done ... oh, I don't know... how about actually doing one ****artistically**** ?

Is that too goddamn much to ask?!

2. Fuck I don't know - a bunch of talentless-but-hip A-level asshole Hollywood types
so far as I can tell.

Maybe there's a real actor in there - even Costner's film managed to pull in Connery at the very end to ensure it wasn't a total shithole of a movie (and, of course, it had Alan Rickman, who is a fucking genius actor who unfortunately had a shitty script to work with in that abomination of a movie).

4. Directed by Ridley Scott.
Starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Max von Sydow, William Hurt,
and Gary Coleman as C-3PO.

I think it'll be a winner!

18. Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman
we the only redeeming features to Kostner's 'Robin Hood'.

As for 'artistic' versions of 'Robin Hood'. Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn in 'Robin and Marian'.

I saw the advert for it in a restaurant yesterday on their big flat panel. And as Rabrrrrr says, it looks amazing. I didn't hear any dialog or anything. Just saw clips of a lot of high-tech fight scenes.

10. I actually liked Prince of Thieves. So sue me.
I also enjoyed Men in Tights.

I loathe and despise Russell Crowe and almost every movie I've ever seen him in, with one exception - American Gangster. I don't think I will see this movie, because I love anything related to Robin Hood and I think this is going to be real crap.

but I will go see this one.
Why is it, peacenik that I am, I love films with combat with large blunt objects?

I dunno.

Explosions out the ass do nothing for me, but combat with blunt instruments, 'that' was the era.

it might be a good movie, but they put the lame parts in the trailer so they don't scare away the people that are scared of quality movies.

40. Russell Crowe is usually pretty good
though the image of Robin Hood I grew up with is a light-hearted/fun loving one from Errol Flynn and the Disney cartoon movie with Robin as a crafty fox... and Crowe is not one to play light characters.

I expect it to be better than the Costner one if only because Crowe is a much better actor than Costner and Scott is a better director than Kevin "Waterworld" Reynolds.

43. Judging a movie by the trailer is kind of like judging a book by the back cover blurb
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 02:02 AM by WildEyedLiberal
It may alert you right away that something will not be to your liking, but it's hardly a way to make a reasoned critique of the material. I particularly don't understand how you can claim to judge the "script, the acting, (and) the directing" from a 30 second trailer, most of which consists of some battle scene (which is, as I'm sure you know, designed to get butts into seats at the theater, not show off the film's Oscar creds).

You may be right. It might suck. But it might not - I would wager to say it probably won't. It's directed by Ridley Scott, who has made some terrific films. It's not like it's Robin Hood as reimagined by Michael Bay. Russell Crowe, whatever one may think of him personally, is a FAR superior actor to Kevin Costner.

And, frankly, who wants to see an "artistic" version of Robin Hood? It's frickin' Robin Hood. Not everything has to be an art house film. It looks like a spectacle movie, and Ridley Scott has a track record of making far better than average spectacle movies, so I'm quite looking forward to it.

44. You actually make a good point.
A trailer is completly different then a movie depending how it is put together, it tells a story about a movie, the movie tells some other story.

You can get a sense of style from a trailer, but many times as you said they are not the same as the movie.

As far as everything being artistic, I agree there should be a wide range of movies. Although personally I think they need thought and questions in them also, but that is just my taste. Some people like to shut down and just watch flashy action scenes, some people like there minds to be challenged by being given things to think about.

45. Well, for once, a Robin Hood movie
I don't want to see. I hate Russell Crowe, and I hate extra violence, just for the sake of violence, and Ridley Scott has a long history with ultra-violent films.

Now, I have to say that Kevin Costner isn't all bad, and Prince of Thieves had its good moments. It wasn't all gravitas, and it had enough humor to keep it moving. When you consider how many actors out there are completely untalented, Costner can impress when he's got something to work with.
