NyQuil, Benedryl etc
Anybody else ever have them have the opposite effect like reving you up rather than put you to sleep?

1. yes
Benadryl makes me antsy. Can't take the stuff - except when I get a spider bite. Then I have to. :)

4. Nyquil makes me...
.
...AMOROUS and Benadryl makes my skin really,
REALLY sensitive.
.
So, they cause a side effect that never really
"inconveniences" me for more than 15-20 seconds.
.
Then I fall asleep quickly.
.
And I'm noticeably more agreeable the next day.
.
Hi! How ya doin'!?!? LOVELY day, wot?
.
.
.
.
.
I just LOVE cold & flu season, don't you?
.

5. All the stuff that is supposed to make me go to sleep
causes me to come to about a five-foot hover above my bed.

I tried natural remedies as well. Various teas, etc. Same awful results. I might as well take espresso intravenously.

6. None of that stuff ever helped me sleep.
When I have an allergy attack, the Benedryl first thing in the AM helps. I would never take any allergy stuff later than about 10AM. I'd be bouncing off the walls for hours.

8. This is a well known side effect of some antihistamines.
A compound can either be an agonist or an antagonist, and in certain cases they effect one sub population one way, and another the opposite way.

A famous case invovles the Cox-2 inhibitors, which are isosteres of aspirin and bond to the same receptors to which Aspirin bonds. Aspirin was known to bond to both Cox-2 and Cox-1 inhibitors, and is thus useful in preventing the clotting of the blood, which is why aspirin has value in heart diseases, even if it lacks marketing impetus.

It was thought that COX-2 inhibitors like Vioxx had only Cox-2 (pain killing and anti-inflammatory) properties and had no effect on COX-1 receptors. But this was not true at all. Vioxx was not an antagonist as Aspirin was, but was rather an agonist. Instead of blocking clotting, it triggered clotting, leading in some cases to heart attacks in a certain subset of patients using it.

It was pulled from the market.

A similar, albeit less dramatic effect takes place with some anti-histamines. Most people are made drowsy by them, but a small subset is actually made more alert with them.

This may have been a boring explanation, but it is, in fact, what is happening.

9. No..
Never had that problem with NyQuil or Benedryl. But I took Sudafed once and had to go to the hospital cuz it caused an irregular heart rate. Felt like my heart was gonna pound right out of my chest. It was pretty frickin' scary! :scared:

12. Benedryl never did a thing to me
doesn't fix my allergies and doesn't put me to sleep or rev me up. Nothing.

NyQuil I don't know, I don't think I've ever tried it. My family just never used it.

The only meds (aside from really strong painkillers or something) that have ever had any kind of weird effect were Comtrex, which I took once and made me feel weird and disconnected, so I didn't take any more, and Astelin, which put me right to sleep.

I hate strong painkillers, and with all the surgeries I've had, I took one once. Hated it and never did it again. Fortunately, I never had a lot of pain with surgery. Hence the reluctance to keep taking Comtrex.
