This was the late 80's, and the car was from the late 70's.

Got like 3 miles to the gallon

1. Those old 70s land torpedos were the best cars ever built.
Well, the most fun to own anyway.

Crown Vics were great. So were Ford LTDs.

The Mercury Marquis was a hell of a beast.

3. Hell yeah!
LTD's. Marquis'. They all rocked in the late 70's. Brute Force.

Dad was a cop, so he got me one of the better kept ones.

That THING rocked!

Painted it Black, of course! I won a free paintjob in the raffle at its sale!

2. My buddy in college
had the same car...actually, more of a mid 80's version with the computer chip enhancements. This thing could walk the dog. He also had many AMC matador police cars from the late 70's...they were just wrong. sustained 120 mph with harness seatbelts. I am just glad those days are over.

5. Cop Cars are nice beasts
I have talked to Taxi drivers, who often drive the same cars, and they said the car always hums and jumps - in a good way

If you want to do a road trip in the right car, go buy a used cop car

Seriously - those things haul!

-----------------------------------

Of course this is 2010 - that road trip better have lots of $$$$. Gas is expensive (drive a Prius now) and burning that kind of gas is expensive.

One time and one time only, I had that thing at 105 on a new highway and it was skiming along like a dream...

6. Those 70's era V8s were designed to run best at 100mph
As opposed to today, where they design cars to best run at the average mph (damn those realists! :) )

14. Single prop planes are great fun.
My dad flew- we used to buzz around the night sky in Ohio. Best natural high you can get.

19. It has about the same risk factor as driving a motorcycle
And just like motorcycles, there's plenty of common sense things you can do to minimize the risk. Also just like motorcycles you have plenty of stupid people doing stupid things which makes the activity look more dangerous than it really is.

I've logged a couple of thousand hours without an accident, but it's one of those things where you have to be vigilant.

15. My first car was a '72 Monte Carlo
When the secondaries opened up in the carb it sounded like it would suck the hood into the intakes. That car was off the ground a few times, and I don't mean on a lift.

20. My dad has a bunch of Town Cars for his business. They're just Crown Vics with better interior.
AND THEY ARE FUCKING TANKS. Seriously, if you can't get 350,000+ miles out of one of those things you're doing something horribly wrong.
