HELP: Name an example from literature, film or history where two traditional enemies team up?
Edited on Tue May-11-10 03:50 PM by Tommy_Carcetti
Or otherwise put aside their differences to fight a common enemy or problem.

Any response is appreciated. Thanks.

2. Do the Batman Joker team ups from comic books count?
Cause usually the whole thing turns out to be just an elaborate rouse set up by the Joker to kill Batman. You'd think he'd've learned by now. What schlemiel.

14. France and the UK. are probably a better example from WWII (and WWI) for that matter
Their beef goes back centuries, and the usual state of affairs had the UK siding with Prussia and the other northern German states against France.

8. That's basically the plot line from the movie "Flash Gordon".
Flash gets all the races of Mongo, fierce rivals, to team up and defeat Ming. I don't remember the original serials all that well, but I seem to recall that was the basic strategy back then, too.

I am pretty sure there's something in the Old Testament to this effect as well. Post pentateuch, I think; not sure. I'll have to put it on the back burner of my brain; nice thing about that back burner is that sooner or later, I remember.

11. Soviets and Americans in WWII
Of course, that was the last thing Stalin wanted - he was a big fan of Hitler, and wanted to rule the world with him. He was shocked, absolutely SHOCKED that Hitler would violate the non aggression treaty!

35. Soviets and Americans weren't "traditional" enemies in 1941 ...

Hell, the Soviet Union had only existed for 19 years at the time, and while relations were difficult given the extreme level of upheaval that had taken place, they at least seemed to be progressing in a positive manner. FDR was a believer in engagement, which is what was taking place between the two nations. The US as a whole was generally distrustful of the USSR (some of FDR's advisors thought it was nuts), more specifically of Stalin personally and communism generally, and vice versa, but the relationship from the establishment of diplomatic relations in the 30s had not at all progressed to the "traditional enemy" status that would emerge later.

As stated up-thread, France and England against Germany is a far better example, for both WWI and WWII.

Further, Stalin did not "love" Hitler. Stalin was one of the people who had read Mein Kampf and understood it, particularly the bits about the supposed needs of the German state to expand its borders into the Ukraine. Even had it not, German rhetoric openly directed in a way to ramp up hatred of the Soviet Union. Throughout the 30's, Stalin's foreign policy was centered around the idea of a collectivist defense strategy developed upon a buffer zone between the USSR and "the West." The goal with regard to Hitler was to use him as a tool against European hegemony, but this policy failed, and the Nazi-Soviet pact was an expression of that failure, a last-ditch attempt to prevent a debilitating war by tying the German war effort so closely to Russian exports that the Germans could not afford to attack them. Their relationship was, in other words, a defensive strategy on the part of the Soviets, one which Stalin appeared to have grossly miscalculated.

15. Enemy Mine (1985, Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.)
Plot summary (from Wikipedia)

In the late 21st century, an interstellar war between humans (associated as the Bilateral Terran Alliance, or BTA) and Dracs (a reptilian humanoid race) is being fought. Human pilot Willis E. Davidge (Dennis Quaid) and Drac pilot Jeriba Shigan (Louis Gossett, Jr.) engage in a spacecraft battle which results in both crashlanding on Fyrine V, a strange, dark alien world with a breathable atmosphere, water, and bizarre animal life.

After initial hostilities, the two eventually learn to cooperate in order to survive. They work together to build a shelter for protection against intermittent bombardment by meteorites, and to satisfy their needs for food, water, and warmth. Over a period of years, they learn to overcome their differences, become friends, and learn each other's languages and cultures. Each saves the other's life on at least one occasion.
