Advice from New Yorkers....... cheap places to eat around the Wellington
My daughter, who is a darn fine young democrat, and used to post here under the name minimandaruth, is going to on a five day trip to New York with her DECA group. They have a pretty packed agenda (Wall Street, Broadway, Statue of Liberty, 30 Rock), but they do have a very little bit of free time, and of course, will be looking for cheap, but good places to eat around her hotel. She is staying the Wellington, close to central park. She is really excited, this will be her first trip to NY, her first trip to the east cost. We are in the Seattle area, so this is a long way for us.

Any advice or must see's for her. Thanks! :) Appreciate it.

1. I don't know where the Wellington, and since there's a couple of sqaure miles around Central Park
that are all "close to Central Park" - where is the hotel?

2. Punch the address in to Yelp

Search for restaurants and check the $ box (as opposed to $$, $$$, etc.)

General tips: Eats get cheaper east or west of midtown; 2nd Ave. (east) and 9th Ave. (west) are both lined with places where actual Noo Yawkers go. Other options include the ubiquitous pizza joints that serve it by the slice, and even the "dirty water" hot dog carts.

And above all: Enjoy!

Edit: It's on 7th between 55th and 56th; the Park begins at 59th (Central Park South). So 9th is the place to go. When you get there, head down (left) into the lower 50s. Also that is right around the corner from Carnegie Hall.

3. Thanks very much
shows you how much I know, so damn ignorant I think Central Park is just short walk thru. All I know about NY, I learned from Law and Order.

So, daughter just mentions to me that she doesn't think she has enough appropriate clothing, since jeans will not be allowed, being DECA, it's all business casual (whatever that is for a teenager). So we are off to the mall and the thrift shops looking for some khakis. Do people still wear those? :)
