unless you're signed in. Which requires that you create an account. And I don't want to create yet another frickin account - much less stay signed in. I guess it's bye bye Google. That frickin background is annoying.

it's secure search, still in "beta", but does not have the background at the moment.

I'm still trying to determine the advantage of SSL on searching, but at least it doesn't have the background.

I don't care what the background looks like. Sometimes they have cool backgrounds but, for the most part, I can really care less as long as the search function is working.

I wish they would do the same with iGoogle. The profiles they have there are atrocious. I may stick with regular Google from now on, and only click over to iGoogle when I want to see my favorites/updates stuff.

I checked to see if there is a way to get rid of it and the only solution I saw was to use google beta. I also noticed that the overall consensus is that this new background thing sucks.

The logo is gone too, but that's ok with me.

Right click on the google page
click page info
click permissions
under load images un-check 'use default' and select block

all images are gone.

21. Actually, there are far better search algorithms than what Google uses

... and google has possession of them. In usability studies subjects would become upset using the better algorithms because the pattern of hits that came up did not look like a google search. Consistently the subjects complained, so Google dropped plans for a switch.

there's a "change background" button on the bottom left of the screen, but when I click it it says "background picker" unavailable. *shrugs*
