It's rattlesnake season here in the desert ...

This one was trying to get in my sliding glass door today.

2. I saw a young, small one in my backyard
here in the middle of San Diego. Our house faces a canyon. Yikes! The last thing I need to worry about.

5. No rattlesnakes here, but I did see a possum in my back yard yesterday.
We never used to see possums around here. It was kind of startling.

8. they do tend to like door stoops, don't they
we had a big beautiful coral snake at a leaky pipe the other day, and have seen lots of squashed snakes on the roads, but so far haven't seen a rattler since the freakout on x-mas day (search my posts then)

14. Yes, this is the 2nd one that has done this ...
since I've lived here that was up on the porch like this, and we had one at the back door once. With all the land here you'd think they would avoid the house. Lots of field mice here for them. I had a beautiful gopher snake last year that came around alot but haven't seen it this year yet. I knew immediately this was a rattlesnake before I even got up close.

Many people say they don't know the difference but to me it's obvious.

We have red racers out here too.

9. Isn't it always rattlesnake season?
Or do they hibernate or something?

10. Rattlesnakes DO hibernate...
.
.
...during the colder seasons.
.
.
.
.
.
In dens, burrows, often called hibernaculum -- according to
one study up to dozens of them in one big mass huddled together
for protection against the elements.

13. Yes, there is a season
but living here in the Mojave, I watch for them all year just to stay in practice.

Never seen a Mojave Green yet and hope I don't but others have this year.

16. That is intense and a fear of mine.
We have timber rattlers here in northern NM, among a few other types of non-venomous snakes.

Scary!
