Red and Black, friend of Jack - Red and Yellow, kill a fellow.
PSA:

Red & Black = milk snake.

Cute little guy, ain't he? Harmless.

Red & Yellow = coral snake.

Also cute, but deadly.

2. I have a more all-purpose mnemonic that has served me well:
"Holy crap, it's a snake! Run! Run! Run!!"

4. We don't see those sorts of snakes where I live.
We have diamond back rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, Sam Brownback, Todd Tihart, and a bunch of other worthless Conservatives.

Nobody knows how to treat a Brownback-bite.

7. The genetics that distinguish those two must be very interesting
These types of things always fascinate me, the specific banding and colors and patterns and how they are encoded and selected for.

9. We had one who had a good ol' time telling us about guys who peed in...
the bushes.

Coral snakes, it seems, don't like to be peed on.

11. This is the kind of thing that makes me glad I live where I do.
No venomous snakes west of the Cascades. Though I tend to leave any wild snakes alone after finding out the hard way that even a bite from a harmless little garter snake stings like hell.

That milk snake is really pretty - that color arrangement is more harmonious than the coral snake.

18. It's amazing how many people are snake-o-phobes
I grew up with garter snakes hanging out around my backyard, also big blue-bellied lizards, so I don't have a prob with reptiles--although I would never disrespect them or deliberately get in their space! But I guess it depends on what you know: I would rather find a huge Boa or Anaconda in my kitchen than a disgusting, plague-carrying San Francisco Roof Rat who's bigger than a Main Coon kitty! (which did happen in my old house. Eeeww!)Reptiles vs Rodents, I'll always cheer on the viper!!
