Holy shit! Lots of little ants!
So I just walked into the kitchen and saw THOUSANDS of little ants crawling around on the floor. The densest patch looks like it's over by the radiator (maybe something fell down there). Should I go out and buy spray or should I simply start mopping the floor with the ants there?

1. My first thought was to suggest that you simply adopt them all...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
...but then you'd probably feel compelled to name them.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Name... each... and... every... one... of... them.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
My second thought is to liberally (sorry) coat some high rubber boots with
olive oil so they can't crawl upyer ankles... and then commence t'stompin'.

.
.
.
We ALL have these little ethical decisions to make every day, don't we?

16. I tried the Febreeze! Works great!
Were you the DUer who originally posted that helpful tip? Thank you very much!

We had those big black ants and the Febreeze actually kept them from marching back through our kitchen.

4. When E. O. Wilson
was asked "What do I do about the ants in my kitchen?"

He said "Put out little dabs of peanut butter. They love it."

6. you may want to search and see how they are getting in
and what's attracting them...

Do you have kids? Are there frequent spills in the kitchen?

7. If they are 'sugar ants'...
vinegar and water in a spray bottle will stop them from coming back....follow the trail and find where they are coming in and start there. Cheap and easy fix. :hi:

10. agree with the trail thing
ants are like americans
they love thier super highways
follow the trail to you find where they are getting in
treat the trail and the ant problem should drop dramatically

8. In my experience, spraying is very ineffective
Ant baits are the most effective control I have found, however there are different types of baits that work on different types of ants. The reason is because different types of ants eat different things. Use a magnifying glass and go online to figure out what type of ant you have and buy baits that are effective for those types of ants. Once you put out the baits, the ants should be gone or mostly all gone in about 24 hours.

11. Vacuum them up and seal up the crevice they are crawling out of.
Use spray foam, caulk, whatever it takes.

They'll probably find another way in. Repeat.

Do that enough times and they won't come back, and you'll have sealed up energy wasting air leaks too.

I never use insecticides. I also haven't had any problem with ants in our house for several years. There's plenty of them outside. We have a huge mature Argentine ant colony in our yard but they seem to know the house is off limits because there's no way I've sealed every little opening an ant might crawl through. Or else the house spiders are very good at grabbing any ant scouts that wander in...

14. After ridding the ants, it's very important that you scrub the floor where they were walking
Ants leave behind a scent that attracts other ants and use that to find where they are suppose to go. Simply killing all the ants will not make them go away. Get some soap and water out and scrub the floor clean to remove any ant scents left behind (mind you, you can't smell the scent but ants can)

17. vacuum or sweep them out the door
clean up whatever they may have been "after"

a little line of diatomacious earth where they are coming in

if they are sugar ants a mixture of sugar, borax and a few drops of water in a small dish sill kill them - that is all that is in expensive baits

20. My grandmother used to have tons of ants in her kitchen...and she had
a simple remedy for it....sprinkle black pepper around every baseboard and sill, and they just stopped coming around

they fucking HATE black pepper..not a woo remedy, in case you were wondering, and it actually works

we used to get them in the kitchen-dining room area in this apartment until I tried this remedy and we have seen zero ants since then

give it a try...tell me how it worked

27. DON'T HURT THE ANTS! Kidding, but not really. Get them out this way...
Of course, you can't pick them up and put them back outside, (like you could with crickets, moths, spiders, beetles, etc). And ants come in armies, and it's you against them. But there are humane ways of telling them, "not this house!"

If they're the little black (harmless) ones, I've found that sprinkling some black pepper around the apparent point of interest will disperse them (not sure if it hurts them, but they do scatter). There's usually a trail of them and if you can concentrate that stream of pepper back to where they seem to be coming in, leaving them room to escape without being doused by pepper, they usually decide to leave, and stay away.

Draw a line in the proverbial sand with black pepper and give them room to evacuate. I did that two months ago, and I haven't seen one in my house sense.

33. If they're sugar ants...
mix 1 tbsp. sugar, 1 tbsp. molasses, 1 tbsp. dry yeast.
Set out in areas where ants are. They eat it, take it back to the nest and it kills every ant who eats it. The sugar and molasses attract them, the yeast swells up and kills them. Non toxic to plants, kids, animals, although they could get a tummy ache. Good luck to all, this has worked great for me, black or red ants.
