1. I have always thought that Aja - Steely Dan
....was the perfect album.

It may not be the greatest album evar but every song on both sides is a good song.

I like all kinds of stuff, but yeah my hippie & jazz friends think the punk stuff I love is crap, and my punk friends think Steely Dan and Pink Floyd are crap. My top 40 friends just have no taste. :)

Not easy for those of us who "walk between the tribes" so to speak.

Early 80s is a bit of slim pickin's but check out The Jam. Especially "Sound Affects". A trio with an Entwhistle loving bass player who rocked the SHIT out of his Rickenbacker. Worth a listen.

Can't go wrong with any of those.

Others - Get The Knack - still say it's one of the greatest albums of all time. And just like their idols The Beatles and The Who, sadly half of this band too is now dead :evilfrown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LjsOoO0VdM

Billy Idol's old band Generation X was pretty damn good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0xWU7e5yXk

I think Some Girls is among the RS best albums. So many great songs: Miss You, far Away Eyes (my fave)Just My Imagination,When the Whip Comes Down, Beast of Burden etc. I know this, the show I was at from that our will NEVER EVER BE TOPPED.

And Animals was so freaking good. Without the Pathos that would later become the The Wall. Pigs on the Wing....

59. big fan of "Look Sharp!" by the Joe Jackson band
I don't think their radio songs do/did that band justice, as they had a lot more going on than just "Is She Really Going Out With Him" (although that is a good tune).

And just about anything from Elvis Costello from the same period is also pretty golden.

63. "English Settlement" & "Mummer" by XTC, "Avalon" by Roxy Music
... REM's first EP ("ChronicTown") and first LP ("Murmur") - everything thru "Fables of the Reconstruction" (lots of bootlegs and re-collected singles in there)

It sucked only if you listened to the arch neo-Romantics too much

Oh, that reminds me: Neil Young, "Rust Never Sleeps"

really was a very innovative, even quirky time for music, even if a lot of the early 80's stuff sounds really dated now (but that's quirky, right? you can recognize it quickly?)

82. Somebody else mentioned Rust Never Sleeps. I'll mention it again
The "edit out the crowd sound" format was never copied or used again (as far as I know).

The half acoustic/half electric format was the shape of things to come.

Lyrically one of the best records by one of the greatest artists.
