Running around, hunting, stealing other people's oxen, and trying not to die of Dysentery on a 2000 mile trek west would be cool.

Jack someone's covered wagon with a musket or blunderbuss. That'd be sweet.

2. Great idea
The #1 reason why I love those GTA games is the freedom to roam around and do a vast amount of different activities. So I like the sandbox style approach to that kind of game.

I think Red Dead Redemption may be something like that, albeit, at a later time after the Oregon Trail. From what I read it's a sandbox style of game like GTA is and you can do different activities such as hunting, gambling, etc. Also there is random encounters such as wild animal attacks as well as different types of random encounters involving humans.

a Western GTA?

Lately I've been playing Just Cause 2, it's GTA on a tropical island where your main goal is to cause a civil war to break out on the island.

7. Grand Theft Coonstoga is a great name!
Of course you'd have to have runaway slaves, Mormons, 49ers, and psychotic Bleeding Kansas voter gangs along for the ride.
