Philly_bob back after heart operation

Drained and weak. Cardiac surgery is like unplugging a computer. Each individual subsystem has to reinitialized. Took four hours to get breathing restated, one day to restore urinary system, three days to restore digestive system, five days to get sinusoidal heart-wave timing stabilized.

Medicare pays because I'm over 65. No sign at all that any of the working professionals knew or cared about
how the bills were paid. They were in it for the challenge, the humanity, the craft.

Wake up from surgery in Intensive Care where there's one nurse per patient. Then transfer to Step-Down Unit where there one nurse for two patients. Talked to one of the nurses about how these ratios are determined. He said that every once in a while the pencil pushers try to change the ratio -- but the data always show that mortality increases.

Anesthesia can take time to wear off, so be patient with yourself if if you find you're a bit "slow."

I was wondering about you earlier today and hoped I hadn't missed your first post back. Are you home now or posting from the hospital?
