Andres Cantor calling Landon Donovan's Goooooooooooaall

This, obviously, is the "goooooooooooooooooooooooaaall" guy. He was doing the radio play-by-play and his call was pasted over the TV footage for this video.

If you like watching the World Cup, or just enjoyed Donovan's goal, this is definitely worth watching.

Cantor grew up in the US, so that partly explains why he gets so emotional about this great goal.

I've been watching some of the games on a Spanish language channel I get, and the announcers really get into it. I wish I understood more Spanish; if I did, I'd probably watch every game on that channel.

2. Sweet. I miss Cantor on Univision. I still watch my tape of some of the '94

WC games, and it's so awesome to hear Cantor do play by play.

The guy on Univision now is okay. ANY Spanish announcer is better than any English-speaking and especially American announcer. The ESPN guys are bored, and you can't even tell from their voice if someone has scored or is close to scoring. Their voices tell NOTHING. They're dead.

Give me a Spanish announcer any day. The game is MUCH more fun in Spanish.

3. At Least ABC/ESPN got some good British announcers

They really know the game especially Ally McCoist.

4. US announcers are taught to be neutral & dispassionate

Especially at places like ESPN and the networks - they don't want the announcers appearing to favor one team over another. And, when announcers here do get passionate (Dick Vitale) they get slammed for being over the top.

6. Neutral is fine. The Univision guys are neutral.

But they're definitely passionate--about the game. They love seeing a beautifully executed play or a masterfully scored goal, and they celebrate the act--no matter who scores--with passion, verve and vitality.

American soccer announcers are zombies. They're pathetic. I'll watch a game with the sound down rather than listen to the ESPN living dead.

The WORST? Once I heard Bob freakin' Costas announced a soccer game. It was like a 90-minute root canal.

It's a good thing I know Spanish, and an even better thing that Univision streams all the WC games free on the web, otherwise this Cup would be miserable.
