I know there are some fans on here that might like to know....

Disclaimer: I don't dislike them but they aren't my favorite band either...

Enjoy! :hi:

The anti-Rush sentiment around here never ceases to amaze me....

14. I love Matt Stone's quote toward the end of the movie.
Something along the lines of "If you can't give it up for Rush now, you're just being an old dickhead."

8. Regardless of your opinion of the band, the film itself is said to be very good.
A terrible, screeching soundtrack, though...

10. Awesome Documentary!
It's good to see the Greatest group in the world finally getting some respect, although not too much on this site I see.

15. There seem to be some people who are stuck on the fact that early Rush lyrics...
...were often inspired by the works of Ayn Rand. I don't have a problem with anyone who despises Ayn Rand. I know I certainly do.

What these people don't take into consideration, though, is that while their lyrics often sing the praises of individuality and personal freedom, it's done with a sensibility and compassion which is absent in Rand's works. They don't do songs in a positive vein about "Free Market > All blah blah blah". Rather, in songs like Big Money from the Power Windows album, the message is quite the opposite.

So Rush may be Libertarian, but there is a world of difference between Left Libertarians and Right Libertarians. Personal freedom vs. free market capitalism and corporate personhood. I'm way in the Left/Libertarian corner in those political quizzes that measure one's political beliefs on a 2-dimensional grid, and consider myself a staunch Progressive. So, Rush has a major degree of appeal to me lyrically, and since I love prog rock, it only follows that I like their music. I think more of their detractors should give material from their entire career a listen, rather than bashing the band for putting a song called "Anthem" on their second album and therefore assuming that every song they do is straight out of "Atlas Shrugged".

I'm tired as hell and this probably read like shit, but it's something that's been bothering me about DU -- and some people feeling the need to skewer Rush all the time -- for a long time.

16. Wow. I wish I could recommend this post
That is a spot on analysis. Even Peart has described Rush as left- leaning libertarians.

20. I have read and enjoyed Neils books about motorcycling.
Edited on Sun Jun-27-10 08:03 PM by david13
One had a little too much self pity, but still good reading. I would like to get to his bicycling books as well.
He does express a rather liberal or left point of view there, perhaps with a lot of Canadian slant (do you blame him on that?)
(He is a Canadian).
He writes about how he was against the song and the idea of "Okie From Muscougie".
I saw a tad of the documentary or You Tube with one of their songs. Just not for me. I guess I have never heard their music.
But they are still out there doing their thing, making the big money, so more power to them. I know Neil enjoys life.
