No need to debate and waste anymore time. Mr. Guy is a Blues and Rock God so let us anoint him now. All hail Buddy Guy!

1. I'm with you!
I saw him not long ago on 'Festival Express', a cool documentary about a trans-Canadian rock tour right after Woodstock. He was great then, even better now. We play "Where is the Next One Comin' From", a great tune.

2. I have always felt Santa Claus would make a good god.
He knows when you have been bad or good and he does sport a mean beard.

3. But Buddy Guy is a bad ass
Edited on Sun Jun-27-10 09:04 PM by Bluzmann57
So does that make him more worthy than the fat ass from the north?

4. Hubert Sumlin, still alive & playing.
Although one of the best blues things I've ever seen or heard was when Buddy was playing with Eric Clapton. Clapton ripped off a blistering solos then nodded at Buddy. Buddy just played one note and bended it up about three octaves, all the while with a shit eating grin on his face that said, "This is how it is done, son." It was on one of those Crossroads guitar summit shows broadcast on PBS. If I remember the tune & fine the video I'll post it.

8. I just saw Mr. Sumlin
as well as Mr. Pinetop Perkins a couple of weeks ago at a Blues Fest in Illinois. And Mr. Sumlin is getting an award this weekend at the Mississippi Valley Blues Fest.

10. !
Pinetop Perkins is still alive? He was one of the original boogie-woogie piano men.

5. The "Live At Antone's" CD changed my life

He's only on two tracks, but they might very well be the deadliest two tracks of his career.

I saw him live at the Circle Star Theater on a package tour with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Dr. John & BB King. He opened with "Sweet Home Chicago." On the Antone's CD, his first track is "Look On Yonders Wall," another Elmore James song which is basically the same song with different lyrics. After the introduction, he hits those opening Elmore chords and the sky rips apart. And just like Jimi, Buddy's vocals are a mighty weapon. He's absolutely "Stone Crazy" on this track, spitting out the words "I know you don;t love me woman, and YONDER COMES YOUR MAN..."

Then, with a split second pause, he dives head first into "Things I Used To Do," at one point slowing it down and building back to a full boil while howling "Do it again, do it again, I don't care, do it again..."

The only other recorded performance I've seen / heard that even comes close to this is the performance of "My Time After A While" with G.E. Smith & The Saturday Night Live Band, from "The Real Deal" CD & DVD, recorded on his home turf at Legends in Chicago. Here's the YouTube clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrv5g9CJi_k

He talks about Muddy in the introduction, but dear God, at the 6 minute mark, he starts CHANNELING Muddy in a way that will send chills up and down your spine. When he gets to the "lookee here, lookee here, lookee here, lookee here" part and unleashes that friggin' killer bee sting solo, it is a thing of beauty.

9. Cool story
I was once at his club in Chicago and Luther Johnson was playing. About halfway through his set, Buddy Guy just wandered on stage and the two men proceeded to have a great jam. And to top it off, the Queen, Koko Taylor just happened to be in the audience and was persuaded to come up and belt out "Wang Dang Doodle". What a great night!

11. Go to his club in Chicago on a Monday night.
It's a religious experience.
