Charlaine Harris on True Blood and Vampires That Sparkle
Before Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels that True Blood is based on, began signing books, she answered some frequently asked questions for the 100 assembled fans at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City, Iowa on June 17th.

"Yes, I'm happy with Alan Ball's production of my novels," Harris said. "Also, if you ask me where I get my inspiration, I will spit on you," she joked.

Bringing Harris to Iowa was the brainchild of Rob Cline, director of the Metro Library Network's Out Loud! Author Series. "We should pick one of those vampire authors," he told the Out Loud! planning committee. Four hours and a few phone calls later, Harris had agreed to the appearance -- a co-headlining event with Jace Everett, singer of the True Blood theme song, "Bad Things."

It was her first visit to Iowa and the first time that she had seen Jace Everett perform live. The first time the two Southerners met was in Los Angeles. "We had a few laughs about all the pretty people in L.A.," Everett, a native Texan, told me after his 75-minute concert. We ain't that purdy 'round these parts, I said. He agreed, but added, "y'all are more my type of people." *

I sat down with Harris before the event to chat. Not on the agenda: asking her where she gets her inspiration.

1. True Blood is so much better than Twilight
And I've seen them both although I only saw the Twilight movies because my niece wanted to see them.

I mean that Twilight bull about vampires being able to go out in daylight is just a crock of crap. I understand there are some liberties taken with each vampire story written when it comes to Vampire Rules. But the one thing that Vampires always were - they were creatures of the night. They slept in the ground and rose up at night. So this whole *sparkly skin* vampires is just a joke.

Mind you True Blood changed a few rules but mainly when it comes to religious artifacts used against Vampires. I think Bill gave a good explanation about it - that they were 'old wives tales'. (Crosses, Churches and Holy Water do not affect Vampires. In fact it's ironic that the only changes that were made in the True Blood vampire were the religious artifacts).

2. Religion took a pounding in the last season in True Blood
Jason Stackhouse was the perfect character for that. His character gives the show a nice touch of humor.

13. Yeah I loved that whole sub-plot last season
especially when Jason first goes over to the crazy preacher's house who has the hot wife and jason is sittin outside fantasizing about her while she cooks dinner on the grill. this chick i know hated it cause of the slams on religion - i told her - hey, it least no kids are getting molested by these religious wackos. :eyes:

3. Here's a nifty tidbit re: vampires in sunlight
A more universal effect of the film is less obvious: the ending of Nosferatu single-handedly created the concept that vampires can be physically harmed by sunlight. While this was a common element of many other mythical creatures, pre-Nosferatu vampires disliked but could endure daylight (for instance, a part in the original Dracula novel shows its count in a London street by day). Since Nosferatu's release, the vampire legends have quickly incorporated the idea of fearing, or being destroyed by, the sun.
From the Wiki entry on the film Nosferatu

4. I think every vampire story takes liberties with what affects them
I just think the sparkle skin stuff is pretty darn stupid if you ask me.

5. That whole series is pretty darn stupid if you ask me
But I was really surprised when I learned that trivia about Nosferatu, and I thought it would be fun to share.

Personally, I think it would be cool if the Twilight vampires all resembled Count Orlok. Edward would probably be a lot less dreamy if he looked like a shaved, boiled rat.

11. I always thought Count Orlok had that hot sexy ugly mess look
That same look that explains how Mick Jaggar and Keith Richards managed to date so many hot models.

6. Uh, hello - Spike and Angel could go out in daylight
albeit bundled up and with a hat and all that. And I consider Joss an authoritative source on all things vampire.

Have you ever read any of Charlie Huston's "Joe Pitt Casebook" books? His "hero" is a vampire who functions as sort of a private eye in NYC, in a world where there's a sort of vampire gang underground. It's in the noir tradition, and very inventive. A little violent for my taste, but that's par for the course for noir.

I wish I got HBO if only to get True Blood and get to oogle this particular swimmer's body.

7. Not really a vampire fanatic
I only saw Twilight because my niece wanted to see them.

I love HBO series so I was drawn to this one.

You'll have to come down to my house - you can watch True Blood here!

9. I read Houston's "Already Dead" a few months ago..
It was very good. I will have to read more soon.

I second Joss' authority on all things vampire. I so miss Buffy.. *sigh* True Blood is filling the void though.. mmm.. Mr. Northman..

10. I read them out of order - they're better in order
And I really miss Buffy. One of those shows you re-watch and say "wow, that was good".,
