30. what states remain? surprised no one has mentioned maine yet
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 08:09 PM by pitohui
considering stephen king was the best-selling writer in the world for a great many years, it seems maine should get a mention with "it" or "under the dome" -- he has many novels that reflect his sense of place

i could name zillions set in louisiana but since we've already got one named, won't bother

i don't see mississippi mentioned which seems odd to me -- it's such a literary hotbed but i'll be tacky and mention a popular novel in a different post, so it will have its own subject line

mississippi: grisham, a time to kill (and a great many others)
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 08:11 PM by pitohui
used to be a funny sign outside clanton, mississippi, "home of a time to kill by john grisham, come and kill some time with us" can't remember the wording exactly but it always tickled my funnybone...

a pop novel but a good read with a good heart (like much of his fiction)

Excellent actor. I've never seen him turn in a bad performance. He stole the show in "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," and he did it through skilled and talented acting, not through any cheap laughs are sentiment at his size. One of my favorite actors.

And yeah, The Station Agent is one of the best Indie movies ever made.

122. I forgot about Shelby Foote
I love his writing on the Civil War and his novel Shiloh.

Richard Wright, Eudora Welty, Jim Henson (cool!)... yeah, so many greats came from there. But people around here seem to want to dwell on crackers like Haley Barbour or others they want to define the state.

Always have been aware of the great musicians from Mississippi. Looks like storytelling gifts run in as many directions as the waters of the delta.
