How bad are carpenter ants?
I mean, really, if there is a constant stream of them to a small hole in the corner of your home where the first and second floor join, that's no big, right?

How do you get rid of these suckers?

1. Seriously....they can get bad.
I would call an exterminator and make sure that you don't have any leaks behind the wall that are causing the wood to get soaked.

5. Don't call pest control. Sure they are pests. But pest control
only controls them. They do not kill them.
Call the exterminator. Maybe you could get Billy. See if he is available. That way you don't have to pay.

6. I have them too- my experience
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 08:48 PM by Madame DuFuey
I had them and thought they were no big deal. They were few and far between, mainly in a specific area on the first floor. Then, one evening I left the lamp next to my bed on upstairs. Ended up with dozens of winged carpenter ants on the wall, lamp, and window. Yikes! Bad experience. I bought a product called Terra ant baits, and within days they were gone. If you go this route, don't spray. You'll want to put the baits out and then leave them alone. The worker ants take the poison back to the nest and it kills the queen. It takes a few days, so don't give up hope. If that doesn't work, there's a product by Max Force specifically for carpenter ants. It's a gel, and from the reviews I read, it's really good.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

9. those things are just borax and sugar
you can mix your own with a drop or two of water and leave it around in shallow lids - works just as good

DE along edges of walss/counters/lintels will deflect them.

18. They are currently only outside
In about a week, I have seen 2 stragglers come in windows. But they appear to have started a satelite colony in the corner of the building, with a constant stream in and out. Our home inspector used to be an exterminator, and said it looks to be a young colony.

My concern with the earth is that it might just trap them inside, since they are living in the building structure, not just visiting to scavenge.

And its a condo, so what I can do is somewhat limited. A condo, which as we just found out, is less than 75% occupied, so low on resources to deal with a problem like this.

10. Bad, but not as bad as termites.
They bore through wood, but they don't eat it.

12. Ours disappeared after the geckos showed up
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 09:18 AM by hobbit709
We had carpenter ants, leaf cutter ants, fire ants, those little piss ants and the small roaches. Within two years after I spotted the geckos hanging around all those ants and the roaches disappeared. We probably have at least a 100 of the little guys living in and around our house now and I've even found eggshells where they hatched new ones. No poison because of our dogs and the geckos are fat and happy.

13. They can do lots of damage over time, and a history of infestation will
affect bank attitudes towards loans on the house

You want to get rid of them ASAP

17. that's really bad, i'd call the termite guy (they're related to termites!)
i've only had carpenter ants on logs, but let's put it this way, if you have a big ole 200 year old oak tree log and a couple years later, it's completely EATEN, that tells you what they can do if they get into your house

call the termite dude and don't waste any time about it, they'll know what to do

i've had actual subterranean termites (not the same species as carpenter ants) and once they're treated and you remove the "bad" boards and put in new wood, and keep it treated/inspected every year, it's cool, they don't come back but you just have to keep ON IT
