Scorsese Fans: I love SHUTTER ISLAND, but why is this film so much more serious than his other
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 06:46 PM by Mike 03
works?

Even CAPE FEAR had some laughs, but I don't think I have ever laughed once during the five times I have watched SHUTTER ISLAND. That got me to thinking: Are there any other Scorsese films where I have not laughed at all, and it was amazingly hard to think of any. Even the grim TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL had some laughs. SHUTTER ISLAND is so deadly serious, and even the DVD had no extras, no commentary.

Any Scorsese fans have theories about SHUTTER ISLAND? I think there is something more going on here.

1. The Last Temptation of Christ
Haven't seen Shutter Island, but I can't recall a single light moment in Scorsese's most underrated masterpiece.

There's agony and joy and fear and terror and sensuality, but not a trace of humor.

3. I laughed my ass off at Last Temptation.
Becuase it was pretentious, boring and MST3K-bad! :-)

4. You must have seen a different film.
We're talking about the Scorsese film starring Willem Defoe. You should see it some time, because it's terrific.

8. i'm glad some other people liked this movie (the last temptation of christ)
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 01:23 PM by pitohui
i saw it back in the day and have to admit that i still think of it sometimes, rare for a movie i've only seen once

it was on vhs in those days, if it's on dvd, i'll have to rent it sometime and see if it's held up as well as it does in memory

the reviews were harsh, for some reason, it was a story that didn't sit well w. a lot of people

11. I also liked 'Last Temptation..'
Saw it a long time ago, then a few years ago I recommended it as part of a movie discussion series in my church. There was quite an interesting discussion of the movie after everyone saw it.

Now THAT was an ass-laugher.

14. C'mon, you didn't like that groundbreaking use of British accents for the Romans?
I don't think anyone with the exception of Pasolini is capable of making a Bible Movie
without it being Bible Movie Bad

13. Wow, I have to agree with you completely.
I had forgotten about LTOC, but it is an incredible masterpiece without a single laugh.

2. I didn't read the book, but perhaps it also didn't have any humor
and Scorsese made the film true to the book.

10. The book had some laugh out loed moments I assure you.
(We are reffering to the bible right?)

Proverbs 21:19 (New Living Translation)
It is better to live alone in the desert than with a crabby, complaining wife.

Genesis 25:30 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
He said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I'm exhausted."

Job 13:5 (New International Version)
If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom.

9. I found Shutter Island hilarous in parts. Espicially the opening music when they land on the island.
It sounds like Norman Bates mother wandered into the girls locker room.

I also liked how they reused sets from Alien 3.
