Poll question: Regardless of your Sex, Do you enjoy any Male-Oriented Satellite Radio?
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 05:13 PM by Mike 03
For unknown reasons, this topic fascinates me.

I am talking of course about Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony, Ron and Fez, and Bubba the Love Sponge. But feel free to add any others that I have failed to mention.

ON EDIT:

If you are female, please tell me why you like the radio personality or personalities that you like.

Thanks

1. None of it. And I despise BTLS.
He got his start here in Tampa. Hated every second of his crap.

2. Of the ones you named? I can't stand any of them.
They all try to out-ahole the next. I don't understand what makes them appealing.

The Male Oriented Radio I do enjoy is the Paul and Young Ron show in South Florida. The difference between Paul and Young Ron and Stern/Opie/Bubba is that P&YR come off like people you actually would like to hang out. A bit edgy, but not assholish, and a lot of self-deprecation, which is good (although Paul's a bit of a prima donna and not the brightest bulb, but still). Stern/Opie/Bubba you just want to slap.

3. I was trying to figure out what "male" oriented radio was... an all Rush station perhaps
But I see it is all asshole talk radio so under those parameters I would say no (Though I confess to liking Imus back in the day)

5. I apologize, my parameters are a bit vague, but Imus probably qualifies, if
Howard Stern and Opie and Anthony are to be believed.

But you are right to question the definition.

Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 05:29 PM by Tobin S.
Not only are they assholes, they are also contagious. They've got a couple of million other morons who want to be just like them.

8. Didn't listen on satellite radio.
Listened to Howard Stern several years before he went exclusively to satellite, watched his radio show on E! at times as well. I got sick of the same bits, him complaining about quitting over and over, and I guess I kind of grew out of it.

I gave O&A a few listens not long ago but got turned off by one of them being a complete Republican d#%3 and just bashing people for this or that.

9. Don't have satellite radio, and probably never will. NPR and the occasional
progressive station that I can get is just fine. Otherwise I just shut the radio and enjoy the driving!

10. I am female.Love Howard. Been listening 15 yrs. I find it funny and honest.
However, I find myself yelling at the radio when he starts talking about politics and sometimes science. But I don't listen for that. I would like to add that at this point I listen because it is part of my life. It kind of acts as background noise in our house when not listening to music. And it has been interesting following along with the development of the show and Howard's personality. Which has, over the years matured quite a bit.

11. Howard Stern has some great qualities, and he also genuinely loves Beth O, which
is a huge plus in my book. I think his age and love for Beth has made him wiser.

12. Nope
But then, I don't enjoy talk radio at all. To me, there's a whole culture of something along the lines of 'it's ok for me to be an asshole because I'm only saying out loud what you wish you could say outloud'

A lot of it, not all, but a lot is simply mean-ass bullshit. Sometimes it's very funny, but not often enough for me to bother.

I'm a woman, quite assertive, and I'm perfectly capable of being an asshole or even very cruel without media inspired supportive assistance thank you, and I usually, not always, but usually, choose not to. I don't need to listen to some opportunistic pressured speech dickhead on the radio attempts to 'shock' and call it truth. Not going to happen. I just get pissed.

When I think about it, the bottom line real reason is probably when I hear something especially irritating on 'talk' radio, even though it's not in any way a two way conversation from the get go, I realize I can't tell them just to fuck off or whatever, and even if I could, they wouldn't give a shit. (I'm certainly not going to call them up)

14. Stern's okay in limited doses, the rest have no appeal for me.
I think "being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole" is a very apt description of these guys and their ilk.

17. We had a free 6-month trial of satellite radio.
It just ended, but I renewed it so I can listen to MSNBC on the radio. I also like POTUS and CNN radio.

I would never listen to any of the shows you mentioned and would block them if I could.

cnn, everytime i turned it on was a commercial. at least 20-30 time. always, every single time, a commercial. was a joke in our car. dont sit thru commercials, so i really never listened to cnn

listened to playboy about a minute, about a man being turned on by his 16 yr old daughter and her friends. and why his wife was mad at him. did it for me.

I live in the Chicago area, and in this town, radio is pretty good. No need for satellite radio.

25. I have never understood Howard Stern from the start
and that was when he was really huge (early 90s) and everyone in my HS listened and/or watched the show on E! late at night...

I gave it an honest chance, but not once has he ever made me laugh...

30. Other.
The other being - meh. The format just doesn't do anything for me.

The only time I can ever remember listening to anything like this was a guy who used to do the morning "drive time" bit in Washington DC in the latter half of the 80s on the FM band. He worked under the name "Grease Man". Doug something or other. And while I didn't really think he was that funny, it was a big topic of conversation at work in the morning, so I was sort of forced to listen in self-defense. I heard a few years back that the guy's career ended abruptly over some truly tasteless racial joke that he told on the air. Can't say that I'm surprised.

I've got to agree with the prior posts on BTLS. I, too, live in the Tampa Bay area, and as far as I am concerned, the guy's got nothing.

Anyway, I've had satellite radio for a number of years now, and just don't listen to any of the "personalities." Sometimes business news, or straight news, channels if something is going on, but other than that I only listen to various music formats on sat radio.
