Yeah sure she may date my most hated player of any sport (A-Rod) but her music isn't that bad.

11. I love the Alejandro video for some reason. I am usually
indifferent to pop music. it reminds me of something I would hear out in the dance clubs during my heydey in the 80's.

However that doesn't mean she's not a loathesome self centered attention seeking ego maniac. Fame went to her head REALLY quickly. Her behavior at the Mets and Yankees games is disgusting. I'm not giving her any of my hard earned money talent or no...

20. Of course she's an attention seeker. That's how you become a celebrity.
And of course she's self-centered. Makes no sense to seek attention for someone else when you're trying to build a rock career.

She's been a big activist for GLBT rights, doing everything from marching in protests to criticizing her own industry and some of her fans for homophobic attitudes. She supported Obama (or mostly opposed Bush) but still publicly called him on his lack of action on GLBT issues. She's an in-your-face feminist (although she supposedly doesn't like the word) and refuses to act the demure little girl society expects of her.

I like her. Reminds me of people like Elvis or Freddy Mercury with her "I am who I am" mentality.

One of her quotes: You see, if I was a guy, and I was sitting her with a cigarette in my hand, grabbing my crotch and talking about how I make music 'cause I love fast cars and fucking girls, you'd call me a rock star. But when I do it in my music and in my videos, because I'm a female, because I make pop music, you're judgmental, and you say that it is distracting. I'm just a rock star.

She's not the first pop celebrity to make an ass of herself in the wrong venue. Male rockers do it all the time, and people think it's charismatic or rebelious--the essence of rock and roll. She does it and everyone acts like she spat on the Sacrament. Which, I guess she did. Gender is a religion in this nation, and like any religion, I'm glad to see a true iconoclast kick it around a bit. Of course it upsets the old folks, it's supposed to.

Just for you, I tried to find an equivalent scandal involving Rush. Couldn't. Little Goodie Two Shoes band. :)

23. I have a problem with people who think the law
Doesn't apply to them. Read about her walking into the Yankee clubhouse and her HARRASSMENT of players. She was told she wasn't allowed in there but ignored it. I don't Luke people who think money fame and power entitles them to whatever they want. That goes for her Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, Brittney Spears or Lebron James. And yes, Rush is a fine example of being famous without using it to do whatever the fuck they want. Lady GaGa could benefit from listening to their song "Limelight".

26. but I don't classify her actions as self-indulgent and spoiled, the
way Lindsey's, Paris', Brittney's, etc. all pretty much undoubtedly are.

I think she is honestly trying to push the envelope, break some barriers, etc. Laws aren't necessarily all beneficial or deserve respect. She's not driving drunk or flipping off her judge (though that is just a matter of respect, and judges don't necessarily automatically deserve such). She's busy irritating people, and getting everyone all fussy, and I appreciate that.

Do her actions get attention? Of course. That's how she stays at the forefront of pop culture and makes her very good living. But does it stem from the same hedonistic core as Lohan's etc.? I honestly don't think so. I think she wants to ruffle feathers, and she succeeds quite nicely.

28. Aha! Rush's guitarist gets in drunken brawl with cops, tasered six times.
:P So maybe Alex would benefit from his own songs, eh? http://blogcritics.org/music/article/alex-lifeson-rush-guitarist-arrested/

As for people thinking the law doesn't apply to them, show me someone not like that. Most people will break whatever law they want to break if they feel they can get away with it. Speeding, cheating on taxes... Half the threads in the Lounge talk about illegal drug use--something a lot more deadly than her acting the ass in the Yankees clubhouse. I'm one of the most prudish people around when it comes to following laws just because of a sense of legality, and there are laws I regularly ignore anyway (Not drug laws, but that's more because I don't like drugs than because I support laws against them).

Not what I'd expected. I haven't heard much of her music, but I didn't like what I heard. She seemed like a Madonna wannabe, but I'm not into Madonna's music either. I'm just not into that kind of dance-pop music.

I don't know. So much autotune, crazy outfits and weird videos that I can't say for sure whether or not she's legitimately talented or not. I don't know--maybe she is, but her actually singing seems to take a back seat to her presentation.

22. She is actually better without the slick production
There are some clips on YouTube of Gaga performing an acoustic (voice and piano) cover of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" and a performance she gave at NYU when she was still just Stephani Germanotta.

She has the potential to have a good career. Like Prince and Freddy Mercury, she's odd and flamboyant, but genuinely talented.

25. You've probably seen these...
The over-production of music these days is just a fact of the industry, of course. My parents complained about rock being "just noise" and having no musical depth. They didn't understand how it boiled music down to its most passionate essence. It was a statement. Music now is making a different statement, and it involves the electronic production. Kind of reminds me of the 80s, with people just having fun and experimenting with all the new toys.

Anyway, she writes her lyrics and music, and it usually has more depth than people realize. Listen to Poker Face, and there's something more happening in the lyrics than just "I'm bluffin' with my muffin." There's a message about gender expectations and what's allowed in a relationship. Same with "Telephone." Listen to the lyrics in "Bad Romance:" "I want your Pyscho, your Vertigo schtick. I want you in my Rear Window, baby you're sick." It's a bit of a nod to Hitchcock, while having great double entendres. It's also her telling her lover she wants him at his worst, his most scary, not just at his best. That's the whole point of the title and the song, in fact, so "Bad Romance" has several connotations, from the idea that she wants a love story like the sappy "bad romance" novels to the idea that she wants the romance badly, to the idea that she wants even the part of the romance that turns out bad. And I know she means all of those levels because she's talked about that. To me, that's decent song writing, especially in an era that eschews complicated lyrics or even more than two lines in a row that explain anything.

Anyway, here are clips of her actually singing. She's not Barbara Streisand, but she's not Rick Astley, either. And you can hear she hears the music, unlike a lot of "singers," (Including a lot I see praised here as the real talents).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoK7T0Xhfss (Before she became Gaga. She claims she died her hair blond because people kept claiming she was trying to be Amy Winehouse.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CUYvWTd6oA (Live acoustic "Poker Face.")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIeCrj_Gn6A (more her and a piano).

And in case you're wondering, no, I'm not really that big a fan of hers or obsessed with her or anything. You should see how much I can write about something I am obsessed with. :) I got into a discussion on theology and history once that was legendary around here for years. Probably longer than most Cormack McCarthy novels. :)

36. Gaga is no Madonna
I think she compares better to Brittney Spears or Christa Aguilera. I see Gaga as a flash in the pan that will be a has-been 5 years from now because whatever talent she does possess doesn't live up to her promotion. Madonna's behavior may have been over the top, but she always had the multidimensional talent needed to sustain her career over the long term. That's why she's still a viable musical commodity after more than 25 years. If Gaga is performing in venues bigger than seedy nightclubs 5 years from now, I'll gladly admit I'm wrong here, but I see her talent as one dimensional which never lasts long. I'm sure she'll always be able to do infomercials.
