1. I just tear the closed end loose and they fold down flat.
If I have a lot I'll use a bigger one and put all the flat ones inside it, but most of the time they either fit nicely inside the garbage bag or garbage can.
put them to work, burn some of those cheerios off you don't need an electrical appliance to flatten cardboard - hell it's already flat put kids to work deconstructing - get a milk crate or one of those plastic storage boxes to match your trash can so it will look tidy, tie it up with string for trash day and put it right on top of your outside can
I miss it. My parents have one and I liked it so when I designed my new kitchen I included a compactor . I lived in a rural area and did not have trash pickup so it was very convenient for minimizing trips to the dump. The down side is not being able to put food or smelly type garbage in it because it does stay in there quite a while. Most of the food stuff was composted so that wasn't a big issue for me.
