Anyone here have a trash compactor? I am thinking of getting one because
I am overwhelmed with boxes from cereal and crackers around here. Can I crush those in a compactor?

1. I just tear the closed end loose and they fold down flat.
If I have a lot I'll use a bigger one and put all the flat ones inside it, but most of the time they either fit nicely inside the garbage bag or garbage can.

2. Yeah, I'm already nesting them but they don't fit in the trash can. They wind up sitting next to it
which is not my favorite thing. (These kids go through an unbelievable amount of Cheerios, so there's a ton of boxes.)

7. I undo all the glued down parts so its flat then tear it apart
they are so flimsy, they tear easily. No problem fitting in the trash. No we don't have recycling either.

3. Do you have recycling?
Our recycle company picks up thin cardboard with the paper.

13. No recycling? That's unfortunate.
We've had recycling around here for over 15 years and it definitely reduces the amount of garbage.

Can you compost? That reduces it, too.

6. you have kids right?
put them to work, burn some of those cheerios off
you don't need an electrical appliance to flatten cardboard - hell it's already flat
put kids to work deconstructing - get a milk crate or one of those plastic storage boxes to match your trash can so it will look tidy, tie it up with string for trash day and put it right on top of your outside can

9. Watch out for that tentacled monster that swims around under the trash
And don't try to use your blaster if you're ever trapped inside.

10. Had one in my previous house and
I miss it. My parents have one and I liked it so when I designed my new kitchen I included a compactor . I lived in a rural area and did not have trash pickup so it was very convenient for minimizing trips to the dump. The down side is not being able to put food or smelly type garbage in it because it does stay in there quite a while. Most of the food stuff was composted so that wasn't a big issue for me.

They do crush things quite well.

15. Why not recycle them instead? My city takes all types of cardboard boxes and even junk mail!
