I have been unemployed over a year. Benefits expired.
I still look on-line almost daily for something that would work for an old timer like me.

No luck yet but I have noticed something a little strange lately.

There are more and more ads for 'interns'. When I was a kid in school, between semesters, we would take jobs as interns. No pay, just experience.

Now these jobs are posted quite frequency. New trend? Work for no pay or just a new definition of work 'intern'?

1. They want workers without paying them.

2. I don't know the answer to the intern thing,
but would be interested to find out myself if anyone else knows...

So sorry to hear about your benefits having expired, Paper Roses. It is so unbelievably maddening to see whats happening to hard working fellow citizens like you. I hope and pray things will soon get better for you.

3. some companies use interns
and they get free help while the intern is hoping that the employer will be so impressed with them they will give them a permanent position. Then the contracts end and it is on to the next batch of interns.

4. What's your problem? There are plenty of opportunities out there!
Why, every day I get a dozen notifications from Monster.com telling me that I can be my own boss if I'm a self-starter who's eager to make it in the exciting field of sales. Up to $80,000 or more guaranteed your first year!!!!1!

You have my sympathies, believe me. Despite what the MSM is preaching, the job market right now is worse than it's ever been during the lifetime of anyone who's actually still working in today's job market. It is a catastrophic failure across the board with tons of downward pressure motivating employers to pay less and hire less, all while charging more.

Best of luck to you!

6. makes me think of Hoover - how he thought things were
getting better because so many people were selling apples etc. on street corners.
Sad, sad thing is is that there is so much work that needs to be done in this country. If democrats would just re-create the CCC or something similar.

7. Some internships pay, others don't.
It can be just another way to say "this is not a permanent position."
