good as the book. Really well done. And that actress was fantastic. Run, don't walk, to the video store and rent it.

2. Did you read the book? Cause it really is about a family loving each other and sticking together
no matter what..and wanting the best for each other in the end.

3. no--i'm still going through a lot of emotional spins
relating to losing my mom and our dog within the past year.

(and a friend of mine was murdered years ago--only her killer was never found/caught and that screwed me up for years--i'm still heartbroken over what happened to her--so i'm afraid that story would be a little too close to home for me--for now)

4. Oh you are smart to be discerning in what you read. There are books I should
have read 15 years ago that I just read now because the timing wasn't right and the feelings were too raw to put it mildly. There truly is no point in re-traumatizing ourselves.

12. I used to love watching cop shows - like "Homicide"
..but in 1995, a friend of mine was murdered, and the killers were never formally brought to justice (the cops have said the prime suspect is dead and his sidekick is in prison on unrelated charges). After that time, I just couldn't get into cop shows, murder mysteries, etc. Like you said, too close to home.

9. How did the family stick together when the mom had an affair
with the detective investigating the crime? And then she took off for years and left the other kids to fend for themselves while the dad slowly went bonkers.

What I really had trouble believing is that the killer built this elaborate den in the middle of a bare cornfield in the middle of town with kids traipsing through it all the time and no one noticed?

14. I was talking about most of the family staying 'in touch' with the murdered girl. They
didn't want to let go. In the end she wanted them all to move on.

11. Wow, I didn't see it about that at all
I did see it as about coming to an understanding of the fragility of people and reaching a certain amount of forgiveness. But not sticking together no matter what. Not even close.

15. You didn't find her relationship with her family was palitable even though she was dead?
Edited on Sat Aug-14-10 07:28 PM by applegrove
It could just be that I am a really sensitive person who has relationships with people not in my life...I run through emotions just thinking of people who are outta my life. That could have affected why I enjoyed the movie so much. It really spoke to me.

6. I watched it the other night
didn't like it at all. Kept fast forwarding - so disappointing. Then I read the reviews on Amazon - lots of people hated the book and movie. I always read the reviews afterwards.

8. I avoided the book for a long time
but when I finally read it, I loved it. An amazing job of taking a difficult subject and making it accessible. Don't know if I can do the movie though.

16. I zoomed through the scary part just like it did with the book. I guess that means my take on the
whole thing is off. But I found it really well done.

10. Never saw the movie, but enjoyed the book
of course it's been years since I've read it, and my tastes have changed somewhat since then. In any case, the premise could have been schlock, but it was very well-done
