New Roomate Gripe - I did not know it was possible that a person could never - Shut Up!
He talks almost ALL the time...about stupid inane stuff...even when you are trying to watch a movie...or doing something else...like finances... and he's ducking his head around to force eye contact...AARGH!

And then when he's not actually talking to you...he's giving a running play by play commentary on his activity of the moment..."I'm sitting down and shifting my buttcheeks and finding a comfy spot." "I'm eating my first spoonful of yummy pudding. I'm eating my second spoonful of yummy pudding."

Or if he's not doing that- he's humming.

And if he's not humming he's loudly sucking his teeth or something.

1. One of my worst nightmares
I could not live with someone who talks all the time. I live mostly inside my own head with a minimum of chatter. This guy needs Skittles to KICK HIS FUCKING ASS!

5. I agree
I usually just stop them mid-sentence and say "what the fuck is your point?" and they usually take the hint. That's just me though.

8. That's a great response! You know, I used to know this guy...
Edited on Sat Sep-04-10 03:50 PM by LeftyFingerPop
that would talk endlessly about total crap when I was trying to concentrate and shit, and he always talked at the worse times, do you know what I mean? I mean, a little talking sometimes is good, but when you are trying to concentrate or do something important, the last thing I need to hear is some guy babbling on about how he cut himself shaving this morning and he could not stop the bleeding without going through a whole roll of toilet paper and how he was thinking about buying a first aid kit the other day in case something like this ever happens but he never got around to it because, you know, they can be somewhat expensive ans if he spent the money on a first aid kit, he would not have enough money to buy dinner so he decided to forget about the first aid kit for now. There are several types of first aid kits you can buy. The smallest have just a few band-aids in them, and maybe some ointment.

This guy is probably terrified of actually being alone and having to listen to his own thoughts.

(Or, I suppose he could just be an annoying dick.)

7. Gah -- which is why I never had roommates.
It was bad enough in college. But after college I lived on my own for several years. I could go days without saying a word. Ahhhh...heaven.

9. Your roommate = my boyfriend. I love him but I am going insane he never stops
and since we're death do us part, I'm praying for an early grave.
(Isn't that a country and western song? )

I paraphrase John Lennon in "I'm So Tired,"
"I'd give you every thing I got for a little peace AND QUIET."

10. i had a roommate like that
talked nonstop and, on the occasion that he'd be saying something worth discussing, you'd never get a word in edgewise.

my husband and i were living with him before we got married and i honestly think the wedding never would have happened if we'd continued living with him because it put so much strain on our relationship

12. I know someone like that.
Like a Chatty Cathy doll with the string permanently pulled. She got it honestly, her mother was worse.

I kept saying I was going to have the South Austin Yenta-Off between Mary and my neighbor Carol.
Mary had the edge in words per minute and Carol had the edge in volume.

15. I used to work with a woman who constantly mumbled to herself
I even snapped at her once. I was very happy to get another job to get away from her constantly talking to herself about what she was doing.

She drove me nuts. Yanking out my hair nuts.

18. If someone can't just shut the fuck up...
They need to be smacked. Honestly, take my husband and me. We will sit in a totally quiet house me in my recliner, he is his, and never say a word to each other for hours. Silence is comfort.
I think it lends to how unconfident someone is in their own skin and mind that they can't stand silence. Maybe they are just unsure. Maybe you speak to them about them never shut up. Talk to him, reassure him...then tell him to shut the hell up. =)

19. One of my clients transformed a group office to individual offices
because of a person like that.

After the offices had been completed, she still hollered "bless you" when somebody sneezed.

Some people just have to talk.

Nobody forced you to have a roommate. Nor this roommate.
I have two cats, and I love everything they say.

nervous and insecure and fears the whole situation of meeting someone new. If things don't ease up, then deal with it.

27. Totally bummer. I HAVE to have peace in my place. I've had
mostly great roommates in the past. I'm happy to live alone w/my kitty but if I found a roommate that was perfect for me, I think I'd enjoy it. It's just that you really have to be careful when choosing them. I wouldn't be able to have an S.O. who talked too much. As far as your roommate goes, I would without question tell him in a nice way that silence it really important to you.

His "did you have a good lunch" (dude, we only get 30 minutes, how much fun could I have?) turns into "so what did you have for lunch" turns into wanting more details about my lunchtime. Ok, you just saw me 31 minutes ago...not a full day or a weekend, 31 minutes.
If it's not that, it's other off the wall, random commments that he tries to turn into a full conversation.
Forced idle chatter gets on my last nerve. Stop. Just stop. Especially if my nose is to the keyboard/computer screen and I am not looking at you and giving you loooonnnnggg pauses in between my answers to you.
