since I had my last cigarette. Is it safe to celebrate...just a little?

I went cold turkey. It was hard the first couple of days, after that not too bad. I asked the folks here for advice, and used many of the suggestions. DU'ers were very helpful.

This may sound silly, but for the first couple of days I stayed home. Made sure I didn't go anywhere near where I could buy cigarettes (I went out for walks and and stuff, but away from stores). The few times I had to go, I took my son, he kept me focused.

I smoked for 25 years, gradually going from a half-pack to a full pack
to 2 packs to THREE PACKS A DAY.

Quit twice. Cold turkey. Once during the 80's (2 packs a day at that
point) and lasted about 3 months. Avoiding places where you can buy
cigarettes is good advice -- the first time I tried, I was walking by a
gas station and, on impulse, went in and bought some. By the NEXT
DAY, I was smoking 2 packs a day again.

Second time 1997 (3 packs a day). Although, it took me two whole
years from the time I decided to quit until I actually did. Back then,
you could still afford to buy cartons and I started buying by the
more expensive pack rate as "motivation" to quit -- plus I could
"quit when I finish this pack" instead of "quit when I finish this
carton".

.
When I finally quit, I have to tell you it was a breeze. Maybe
7 or 8 YEARS later, I got rare mild cravings. That passed too.

Two years to get my mind right -- and then no problem whatsoever.

Be the bowl.

Congratulations -- and again... I think you should celebrate every
day if you feel like it. Someday, celebration won't be necessary as
it will become "just the way things are".

16. Thanks MFM....
I quit once before, but not because I wanted to quit, one day it just tasted really nasty to me. Pretty easy to quit that way. Lasted for about 4 months, then some stressful stuff came up and at first it was just a drag here and there...

I never went back to 2 packs a day, the most I smoked was maybe 8 a day. I know I still have a ways to go, but I do feel good about it. I feel confindent, like this was the right time.
