I love my cats, but they sure can be weird
Our newest addition, a domestic short hair (how come mutt cats are called dsh, but mutt dogs are just called mutts?) about five months old, is very personable. Plays well with his mentor cat as well as with the dogs, who outnumber the cats 2-1. So, here's this dsh who loves to climb up on my desk and keep me company. Why, given the fact that there are tons of things to lay on - paper, binders, stapler, hole punch, and other odds and ends, does he choose to step on and lie on the keyboard. His typing leaves something to be desired, and he manages to open hundreds of tabs in the browser. To say nothing of pushing my fingers down onto the mouse and clicking where I don't want to click. That said, it is kind of fun watching him go after the cursor. I think I'm going to have to get him his own keyboard.

1. Lol - what a picture - in fact we need a picture.
He has dogs to play with and he comes to be with you?

Sounds like a character.

2. You need to train it not to sit on the keyboard
Just shoo it away and don't pay attention to it for an hour after every time it sits there. It is very easy if you stick to it. The cats in my house don't sit on computers, keyboard, printers, jackets, the table by the sink, a couch in our basement, and they won't go into my room.

3. he wants your attention
my older cat sits on my chest if I'm trying to read in bed so I can't read

he thinks that if he does that, I'll lose interest and turn out the light

Looks like fun! You could get him a free old monitor on freecycle or craigslist and put it on the floor.

5. He's doing this because you're paying attention to the keyboard
He sees no reason for you to pay attention to the keyboard when you should be attending to your very attractive cat.

6. Cats will usually sit on the thing you're paying attention to.
They will try to intercept your attention from that object to themselves. If you are using a computer that cat will sit on the keyboard. If you are reading a newspaper the cat will sit on the newspaper. If you are lying in bed reading a book the cat will sit on your chest, between your face and the book. They just love to soak up those attention rays.

7. My cats are like that
They are attention-whores. But they are very adorable.
But they like to sit on top of things even if I'm not around. If I have an empty room and want one of my cats to sit in a specific place on the floor, I only need to put down a single piece of paper there.

9. Very true
Brianna, my Maine Coon-and-god-knows-what calico mix, is a champ at this. I like to read in bed, and she inevitably comes and parks herself on the book. My wife works late nights, and I don't know how many times I've heard her come home and giggle at the sight of me snoring away and this big honking cat flopped across some book.

11. Cats know exactly where the most of your attention is directed and since he cannot sit on
the screen he chooses the next best thing: the keyboard. When I had a cat as a kid and he wanted attention he would sit on the newspaper if I was reading it on the floor. Cats just know.
