Well, the comic strip "Cathy" has ended.
The last strip was yesterday, and it went out with a bang.

Cathy announces to her parents she's pregnant. :boring:

1. Good riddance.
A more thorough waste of newsprint I've never seen.

21. +1.
I can finally get a break from my mother asking my better half if she's seen the latest Cathy.

Holy FUCK, I hated that strip.

2. So it didn't end with Hagar the Horrible mangling her to death?

3. I surprised myself
I actually choked up reading that last strip. While I was never a huge Cathy fan, when it first came out, it was refreshing to see a female protagonist that wasn't a housewife, a star reporter or some little girl.

I pretty much stopped caring about the comics page around the time that Bloom County went away.

Just the same, if I controlled the world, Marian Henley's Maxine would still be in print.

4. Bloom County was a treasure
I didn't discover it until years after it was over. Loved it, reread the compilations many many times.

I miss Bloom County :-(

5. I could just imagine Bloom County and Smirky...
I don't think Bush would have survived the savage satire. :-)

Bloom County is available on-line, BTW.

19. Bloom County, Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes
Miss them all... The only print comic I read anymore is FoxTrot on Sundays.

8. And thank that fucking awful thing is finally put in the coffin. "I'm fat - ACK! Ice cream time!"
and then the next day's is "ACK! I'm fat because I ate ice cream! Ack! My job sucks! I'll eat ice cream!"

ad nauseum.

Stupid, stupid, stupid fucking comic that was rarely "comic", and most of the time just fucking ignorant.

24. A comics page free of Garfield will be MORE than welcome.
THAT's a useless waste of space, right there. Garfield minus Garfield blows it away.

10. well, it did chronicle some pretty accurate aspects of being female

career woman, changes over time, hilarious neuroses and family relationships, and highly accurate shopping jokes and commentaries. I never laughed as hard as I did over some of her comments about women's fashions.

As annoying as she could be at times, I will miss the comic. And she made a great living out of it. That has to count for something.

12. I'm with you, my dear tigereye...
I did enjoy it too. Even though she could be annoying, there was a lot there that was accurate for many women.

And the last strip was really moving.

:hi:

13. I thought so too, Peggy, after all her starts and stops with Irving!
Edited on Mon Oct-04-10 11:09 AM by tigereye

But I still have one strip somewhere that made fun of the size of women's purses, and I have never laughed so hard at a comic strip as I did at that one.

There really weren't that many well-known "feminist" comic strips- I can't remember the name of the other one. Wait! It was Sylvia. I don't know if that one is still out there or not.

16. She didn't
But you don't want to know how it happened. And it will get this thread locked. And would probably get me tombstoned for gross insensitivity. And cause not a few DUers to laugh. And then feel guilty for laughing.

25. Hmmm...the ending leaves it open for a "sequel" comic strip
featuring the next generation, if the cartoonist changes her mind and decides to come out of retirement someday...
