1. People with Disabilities,
Especially if they also fall into any of those other categories.

4. I'd say poor people, but they aren't a minority!
and the numbers grow every day, thanks to the Pugs and their 'trickle-on' economic policies.

8. No, poor people are a minority
But I'd definitely agree that the poorest 20% of Americans are disenfranchised and have been disenfranchised by every Administration, Democratic and Republican, since LBJ. Every year the middle class does a little better. The rich do a lot better. And the poor get poorer.

7. Overweight
It's still ok to pick on people who are fat. In fact, I believe there are statistics that suggest that the overweight not only have a harder time finding a mate, they also have a harder time getting a job. And when they get that job, they are more likely to be overlooked for promotion.

10. Illegal Immigrants
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 05:47 PM by redqueen
For society / the man on the street - I'd definitely say white males.

For TPTB, everyone else on your list.

on edit: somehow I missed the 'to target' qualifier... so taking that into consideration, I'd say that out of the choices in your list it's illegal immigrants. But NNadir seems to have the best answer IMO.

Right now I would have to say gays are the most targeted minority.

12. Atheists.
Bush I declared that we are not citizens of the United States.

Should the horrible human being Bush II be elected President, I think it's curtains for us.

14. Not only that
But we cannot be open about our atheism and expect to be elected to any office.

Not trying to knock any other minority, but we seem to be a persmissible group to hate. Clergy get to tell everyone about how aweful we are and no one rises up against their hate speech. Fred Phelps may blast gays but people blast right back at him. Nearly every Orthodox Church throughout the land lays claim to us beig evil and yet there is no reaction. It is permissible to hate atheists in America.

20. When I was a christian...
When I was a christian (all through childhood and even into first year of college), I thought atheists were *mean* (even though I didn't think I knew any). I'm not sure exactly where I got the idea, I just had an assumption about the kind of people they were, you know? Christians were loving, and atheists were cold and unplesant.

Oddly, I also thought there were hoards and hoards of them... I'm not sure where I thought they were hiding. Out "there" somewhere, I guess, just waiting to storm the gates and persecute us vulnerable christians! Because of course, this country is so unfair to christians.

As it turns out, I probably did know a lot of them. I think it's like the gay thing. Some people think they don't know any gay people, partially because they think all gay people act like Jack on "Will & Grace", and good heavens, they don't know anyone like that. And also, aside from an understandable incentive to stay on the down-low, it turns out gay people (and atheists) don't necessarily go around talking about being gay (or atheist) all the dang time, as they are actually *people* not just one-dimentional caracitures.

I just find it amusing how much my view of the world has changed (and how happy I am about that).

16. Do they count as unprotected, though?
I agree they're a favorite target, but doesn't the ADL count them out as being unprotected?

and it inspired this thread:

PS: I'm Jewish, and we are the most heavily protected minority.

23. atheists
effectively denied the right to hold political office.

Constantly exposed to anti-atheistic propaganda, much of it government sponsored or funded.
