Is it ok to post pictures you find on the interent, any copyright probs

If I find a picture I like can I clip out and post it here without any problems?

Pictures on many sites are copyrighted.

Hot linking (ie, pasting the URL of the picture into a post and thus linking directly to the site) is not good Net manners, either. Hot linking can create unexpected bandwidth spikes for web owners, which can result in additional costs or, in extreme cases, in suspended accounts.

The best bet is to contact the web site and ask for permission.

There is some room for appropriation of genuine news photographs posted for discussion, mockery, playful satire, and photoshopping but most photographs are copyrighted to the photographer and it is a violation to post them without permission. If you like the photo enough to want to post it, it's probably good enough to be worth a moment to email the photographer for permission to post.
