can someone write a resume for me?
i haven't had a regular job in 25 years, but i have 2 interviews tomorrow. trying to get graphic design work. studying that right now, about halfway through, although i had quite a bit of practice before the classes.
one interview is with a political pr firm, the other is with my favorite beer company. got good things in my experience for both companies, although very different things. argh. i may just skip it and wing it. i have a portfolio to show, and that would be what both really want to know.
both are pretty informal situations. the beer company one is mostly a courtesy, as they don't have anything open right now anyway. the other one will likely be working in the feb. 2011 muni election. i was mostly just asked to come have a cup of coffee and meet and greet, so i don't feel much pressure.

but i am looking for work and will prolly need one soon one way or another. but damn i hate doing resumes.

1. There are probably plenty of free resources for that in your community
Unless you want a resume with lots of references to Olive Garden and ducks.

3. Write one sentence per decade.

2000s:

Then attach 5 of your best pieces.

Don't forget your name and phone number.

i'm a mid-level manager in an industry that uses lots of graphics designers and creative types.

i can tell what NOT to highlight.

5. If you've already got the interviews, the resume is irrelevant (unless requested after the fact)...
Don't mention the beer thing. Even with a beer company, it won't buy you points but may buy you negative marks as a potential alcoholic (reality isn't relevant here). If you do need one, PM me with a phone number. Mine will be a 717 area code on your caller ID. Just do it soon. I'll be off of DU for the night within half an hour.

8. they actually know me quite well.
they aren't worried about my character. that's why they are giving the interview.
i not only know there product, i have sold them ads, and designed them for them. simple little program ads, but still.

14. In that case, if it isn't too late in the day, I would advise "short and sweet".
Stick mostly to the facts (employer, dates of service, self-employment, education, etc.) and just list major accomplishments. If they know you well, you can skip the "have to impress everyone from Oprah to Soros" stuff.

15. posted a draft below.
the person i am meeting with does not know me, but the bosses do. he needs to see what i know if i am ever to work for them.
but like i said, if i had job experience this would be easy. i haven't had a paid job in 25 years.
and i am writing one resume for 2 really different companies, although the jobs are pretty much the same.

but, i am a wysiwyg kind of girl. it is pretty short and sweet, really a big business card- here's my phone number.

17. I like your work and the resume is rather well done with one possible exception...
...
Do you know the political bias of the person you are meeting with? Unfortunately, that can come into play and not run afoul of "fair hiring" laws. I'm not sure how you would restructure it given the nature of the experience, but on the other hand, if they won't hire you for political reasons you really don't want to work there anyway.

18. not worried about that.
the pr firm works for dems, and the beer guys already know that about me. and it just is what i have to put on there, and also what i want to do.
i am talking to the beer guys because i think they have outstanding designs, and because they are a real family company to work for. and they love me.

6. Avoid kr8tiv resumes
I used to hire graphic designers. The overly 'designy' and thus unreadable resumes went in the roundfile.

7. Submitting a resume is a presumption someone should or could
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 06:36 PM by RandomThoughts
hire you. That is a presumption they have something you would trade for.

I am already due beer and travel money, so they will pay it, I don't have to work for it, it is already due to me.

When they pay what is due, I figure millions by now, then I will think about working again. It would be insane to work when I am already due that money.

Side note, I have no problems with those without material money, or that use such money for other good causes, if they can defend the use of that money and what it is used for.

12. a little background- how i got this interview
i sent this email to someone i had taken a class with. i was good in the class, and stood out. this is the political pr firm.

how are you doing? are you busy with election clients? hope that you have lots
of work.

i just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that although i am still
working on my saic ce certificate, i am in need of work. i am sure you have a
lot of very talented people already, and i would hope that they all have
greater skills and experience than i. however, i figured it was worth taking a
minute to drop you a note just in case you need someone to do the kind of scut
work that would make your talent nod off at their desk.
what i lack in design chops, at least i make up in my political knowledge,
which i eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
i wont hold it against you if you fall over laughing at the thought of giving
me work, but hey, when you need work, you do what you gotta do.

sorry we didn't get more opportunity to talk when we were in class together. i
am sure it would have been interesting conversation.

best
mo

You, my friend, are a breath of fresh air. I might suggest that you pump up
the positive and not be too humble.

Anyhoo, why don't you come over to xxxxxx one day in the near future for a
cup of coffee?

Let me know if you have any time next week.

21. well, it was a wonderful interview
the beer company guy was very nice, and even sent me home with some beer. he didn't have a job to offer, but he took nearly an hour out of his day to talk about beer and bicycle team uniforms, and how much i love his work.

would it be rude to ask him how i did?

22. Since he's not hiring...
No.

Be forthright if he seems hesitant to answer that because you knew there was no position on the line you treated it and considered it to be "practice" and would like feedback on where you were strong and where you need improvement in your interviews.

You're interested in work/position if one comes available but you're not expecting anything and nothing he says will influence your opinion of the company, any upcoming offer or him.
