I don't think people understand that there are facts and anything else apart from that is not a fact.

There are no "both" sides - there is the factual side of evolution, and then there are the tens of thousands of other religious ideas, none of which are facts.

The intelligent design/creationist criminals would have think there are only two sides to the issues, and that "both" sides need to be heard, but they are criminally wrong.

I get sick and tired of people misusing "fact" when they mean "opinion" - "Reagan was president" is fact. "Reagan was a shitty dangerously ignorant president who fucked the country over in ways untold that we're still paying for" is not fact (well, I think it is, but I know it isn't).

Glenn Beck and other righties come out and offer as "fact" whatever their ignorant opinion is.

But, the Republicans (here's one of Reagan's great legacies) have systematically destroyed mathematics and science education in this country, so most people (of any political persuasion) simply don't know how to differentiate between fact and opinion. "Well, it doesn't seem to me that stuff is made of atoms and quarks and shit - I don't see 'em - so I ain't believin' in 'em".

Sigh.

I know there is scientific fact, and I know there are beliefs. To me, they don't interfere with one another, but to some people they do.

Actually, Mr. Gut came up with that one when he knew his emotions got in the way of his reasoning. I agree with you of course, but facts just get in the way of certain agendas, so they have figured out a way around them, just deny them. Call it a conspiracy. Act like they know more than you do and that modifies the fact....the list goes on and on.
