So I lost my dream job
Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 09:41 PM by jdp349
I'm not kidding when I mean dream job either.

I mean it was everything a kid just out of undergrad could hope for. Prestigious consulting job getting to work and specialize in my favorite industry, traveling across the country and around the world, living in New York City, making about $55,000 a year.

The interviews went awesome, they thought I was great. They said they'd be back to me in a week or two. However because I wanted it so badly I became a nervous wreck and couldn't stand the wait I made what has been the single greatest mistake in my life. I'd never wanted something so badly in my life, I couldn't tolerate the wait and left a voicemail with the recruiter about another offer I'd received (far less exciting, but still good) and asked they inform me of their decision as soon as possible. As soon as I hung up that phone I realized I'd just dug my own grave and would have given ANYTHING to take it back. I didn't get the job and sure enough, that message was the reason, its been confirmed.

There is a chance to salvage this situation but the probability is very low. I cannot believe for the life of me that my wanting something so badly it caused me to lose it. Lesson learned I suppose, always keep your cool and your nerves in check. An important lesson to learn but at such a tremendous cost!

I'm at about as at peace with it as possible, but I know it'll haunt me. I just hope I can find an opportunity to redeem myself in my own eyes. I know a lot of other people have a lot worse problems than this but I'll admit, it doesn't make it sting any less.

1. That is a tough loss...
I hope that you'll never have another situation like that one. Perhaps they will change their minds?

Otherwise, perhaps the other job will be really good for you?

Don't beat yourself up over this. We ALL, and I do mean ALL, make stupid mistakes. It's better, believe me, to make them early in your career and get them out of the way.

Hang in there. It WILL get better.

2. are you in touch with the hiring DM?
pitch them. you have to sell yourself. there is something positive you can find in this to win them over. At this point you have nothing to lose. Being completely honest and upfront and enthusiastic helps a lot.

3. There's no harm in trying to salvage it
Be honest, tell them that you were so excited about this job and that you now realize it was a mistake to try to force their hand, but that it was simply your enthusiasm for working for them that caused you to do it. Be honest, be passionate, be remorseful and let them know that you'd much rather have their job than the other one, etc etc etc

There is NO harm in trying. If you don't, you will always wonder.

Go for it!

4. Hey, maybe it wasn't the dream job...
You don't know that it was, but only that it "coulda-shoulda-woulda"). That may not be true. Your message to the recruiter didn't sound out of line to me, anyway.

I look at it this way- if that phone message was the reason, it sounds like they might not have been convinced of hiring you anyone.

It wasn't meant to be, and as I'm finding out, that's not the worst thing. Have faith and your experience will see you though. Hang in there!

7. what mrmickeysmom said
if they didn't hire you because you made that phone message, you weren't getting hired anyways, they're just using that as an excuse

dream jobs in nyc in dream industries w. free travel go to nephews and nieces, sons and daughters of whoever somebody wants to curry favor with anyway, that just gives them an excuse to put it on you when you were just being interviewed so they could claim they went through the proper motions

5. I have never
made a professional move which hasn't ultimately been a great move...even when the reason for the move wasn't my choice. The job you ultimately get will make you forget this and will also be a better fit.

6. I thought I lost my dream job a year or so ago
Only to find a job this year that is better than what I could have dreamed. Hang in there. You don't have to win it all today.
