Pick a state (three questions in one.)

1. If you could pick any U.S. state to live in, what would it be?
2. If you couldn't pick the state you live in now, would your answer change, and if so, to what?
3. If you couldn't pick any state you have ever lived in, would your answer change, and if so, to what?

My own answers:
My home state is Illinois, which is pleasant enough, so I guess I would stay put.
If not Illinois, then New York, where I lived at one time. I used to live in Rochester and know some people there, so that would make it a good starting point.
If I had to pick a state where I had no connections to, pro-labor Michigan would be good. Other states on my "short list" would be Wisconsin, Minnesota, Vermont, Massachusetts. Nice blue states with tolerably cool climates.

So:

1. Minnesota.

2. Hmm. Maybe Illinois, in Chicago. Maybe Wisconsin, so Mr. Brickbat could stay at his job.

3. Maybe California, but I like having four seasons.

New York is where I live and I live here on purpose.

If I couldn't live here I would probably move to Chicago where I grew up and have family.

If I had to pick a state I've never lived in, I'd probably choose Minnesota. I really enjoyed visiting friends in Minneapolis many years ago and I still have tons of friends there, or Wisconsin, where we used to vacation, but my husband would hate it in either place, so maybe Boston area, which makes my list pretty much the same as yours.

Leading contenders are HI, CA, NY/NJ, LA (New Orleans).

But if I had total control, I'm sure I could find an attractive area in any state...

Taxes for retirees are very low.
No income tax on pensions or S/S.
My RE tax is about $1000 annually.

I'd move to MA to be closer to our daughter and grandkids, but can't afford it.

If forced to move, I'd pick somewhere in MA, NH, or VT.

I'm moving to Colorado.

1. I love Indiana and I want to stay here.

2. Montana. Wide open spaces and few people.

3. Oregon. For a secret reason.

but there are also great things and my roots go back 5 generations so it IS my choice

second might be New Mexico (or Chihuahua - you didn't specify for question 2:P )

move to another state I would choose Southern California.

Not for political reasons, certainly, but just cause I like the area, the people are characters (in spite of the fact that lots are dyed-in-the-wool conservatives, the odd progressives you find are gems), and the scenery and history are outstanding, and the air is clean. Plus, from a lot of places you can see forever. I like that, makes me less claustrophobic.

1. Wyoming. Going home next year.

2. I'm in Maryland now, so, yes, my answer changes, to Wyoming.

3. Any state I haven't lived in - hmmm, I've lived in quite a few. I guess Montana. Cause it's close to Wyoming. I'd live just over the border. :) That's probably cheating, but hey . . .

I'm glad we did. I've also lived in Nor Cal, and I'd live in Berkeley again; love that town. I'd also consider Seattle.

So, I guess my answer is Oregon, Calif. and Washington. I also enjoyed living in Washington DC.

I've also lived in Ohio and Colorado (briefly) but have no desire to live in either of those states again. I need a coast.
