OK, I'm a liberal and all but...
.... asshole salesmen, who get in an infantile snit because you refuse to answer their pestering, harassing calls, who decide they're going to call you dozens of times a day until you WILL eventually talk to them need to be savagely beaten with a two by four and left for dead, crying for their mommies.

It isn't telling them to piss off that annoys me. It's the never-ending "We'll check back with you next week/next month/next year until you buy from us" or the stalking "You're not in charge of purchasing decisions? Well, who is? Name, phone number, social security number, payroll history and home address please?" crap that drives me up the wall.

Fucking salesman. Fucking marketers. Jamming crap down the throats of the American public each and every day, keeping people tied down to debt, materialism and the inability to separate who they are from what they own (or worse, comparing what they own to what someone else owns).

1. I've worked a great deal in call centers (though NEVER Outbound)...
.
.
.
...and have had an opportunity to listen to the people placing those calls
between calls and at the end of the night.
.
.
Consumers: some have an inability to separate who they are from what they own
.
.
Telemarketers: some have an inability to separate who they are from what they do
.
.
.
The ones who chose telemarketing as a CAREER (as opposed to college students
picking up some extra bucks short-term) seemed to base MUCH of their self-image
on how successful they were... not in their career or this year or even this WEEK --
but that night.
.
.
.
I highly recommend the movie "Glengary Glenross" -- it gives some EXCELLENT
insight as to what many of these people are like (though not all are dealing
with as cheesy and sleazy a "product" as those guys).
.
.
.
Many seemed clinically and sometimes dangerously depressed if they had had
a bad night. And it seemed much deeper and much more immediate than how
it was going to reflect in their paycheck.
.
.
.
I'm not a salesperson (though I found I CAN be with a concept, such as
environmental or community radio issues). Usually, when I offer something,
and someone says "no", my response is "cool" and maybe "now that THAT'S
out of the way, wanna go have a beer?"
.
.
.
And I DEEPLY resent people calling me over and over again with the same offer.
To be honest, I'll never volunteer to make outbound calls for our local Dems
again -- as pre-election, people were almost SCREAMING at me because they had
been called so often -- sometimes a coupla times a night.
.

3. I don't do phone banking either, just for that reason.
The few times I did in 2004, I'd inject the phrase "in case somehow you've forgotten" after the reminder that the election was only a few days away.

2. Yup, my wife deals with that crap all the time.
And the thing is as part owner of the company (family business) she does have the authority to decline a sales offer on behalf of the company. But because she answere dthe phone and is a female, salesmen have a hard time understanding that.

4. My older cousin was my godmother, role model, mentor, hero... you name it.
.
.
.
She was also about 5'1, 100 pounds, had close-cropped hair, was a nephrologist and
liked dressing down -- a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants were her favorites.
.
.
.
Late in her life (she died young), she was "given" a partnership in a small 5-member
corporation of doctors (I think actually sold the position for a dollar for legal reasons)
by a retiring doctor who admired her and her work.
.
.
.
One year, their accountant told them that they needed to spend a boatload of money
on expenses or it would get eaten up in taxes. They asked her to go down to the dealer
and buy them all one of the new sporty Cadillac models that had just come out.
.
.
.
The sales manager took one look at her when she had a question, gave an elitist sniff,
and passed her off to the noob salesman -- Binky.
.
.
.
Binky (not his real name, but you get the point), in his first week on the job, ended
up nailing down around $200,000 in sales with about half-an-hour's worth of work.
.
.
.
Of course, not before the sales manager tried to horn him out of the deal. My cousin
saw that happening and sent him packing. She said it was EXTRAORDINARILY fun.
