Lyrics that kept great songs from being hit singles.

It doesn't necessarily have to be obscene lyrics, but it could be. I'm thinking in particular of the Phil Ochs song "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends". Great song that could have been a hit single, except for the fact that radio stations would not play a single with the lyrics, "Smoking marijuana is more fun than drinking beer"!

"There are problems in this world, but I'm too fuckin' lazy to do anything about it" is not a sentiment that plays well with advertisers. They want us lazy, so that we may buy their products.

but I keep getting grief about it since they apparenttly tend to have a "skinhead" audience. I like their music, though. A friend actually told me not to go and see them. I love Black Out. It is fun to blast in the car and was written by Woody Guthrie.

I don't know why the non-Nazi skinheads insist upon trying to redeem the name skinhead but whatever.:shrug: I have three of their CDs and there is a song called "Skinhead on the MBTA" (heh, I love spoof songs). That song would never make it on the radio either but its good.

I think a lot of people don't even pay attention to the words unless they are unprintable

Rebel Rebel ( with nothing about being a boy or a girl, of course) being used to advertise... cruises, cars, I don't really remember what it was. There are lots of songs about drag queens, self-stimulation, use of drugs, and weird sexuality that are still played on the radio... Lola for example.

I remember in early 1968 they both were getting lots of airplay until someone pointed out what the chant at the end of "Walrus" was saying and that "she comes in colours" meant literally what it said. (That's actually quite a disturbing image, come to think of it.):(
