ElderGreenKid got a kick-butt new black nickel tenor sax and played it at the Winter Concert. Sadly
you can't really make out how nice it looks in these videos, but it sounds great. :)

"Sleigh Ride" Gr. 5-8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIlIQs4_AlU

"Caribbean Carnival" Gr. 7 & 8 (Clarinets and saxophones, with drums and bass) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsJyi01NY8E

"Jazzy Merry Christmas" Gr 7 & 8 again. This is my fave because he has a couple of short little solos in it. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awqWE54Wk40

1. Totally rockin'! From what I could see, your son sure is a cutie!
He looks like the saxaphone type.

I watched the last one which you said was your favorite.

The grade-schooler next door to my mom used to go outdoors when he was learning to play the saxaphone. Always "Bill Bailey" -- cutest rendition I ever heard, hands down. :)

2. Tomorrow we'll watch/listen to your videos
My son is in high school and plays saxophone. It's one of those things I encouraged him to do because I only started to play an instrument, and regret not continuing to learn, but loved singing with glee club and girls chorus in junior high. (He just went to bed, but has the newer computer, better for viewing videos!)
It's 12:19 am and we have been going outside checking the sky to see if the moon is visible. We watched the first part of the eclipse before the misty clouds obscured the shadowy moon.

8. I understand that regret, except in my case it's that I am completely unmusical. (Can't
sing either) Hence my extreme pride in my musical kiddo, who clearly got it from his dad.

Glad you had a chance to see the eclipse. Everyone here was too cold and tired to even see if it was visible. :(

3. What brand/model? My 15 year-old daughter is playing my 76 Selmer Signet alto now.
A fine instrument becomes an heirloom.

5. This one is a Kessler that we bought second-hand from a musician via ebay. It looks like this
http://www.kesslermusic.com/KesslerCustomSax/kctdbcsp/sax.htm

He started out on a 1960s Buescher alto (also from ebay) but after his first year of playing it pretty much died, so we bought him a Suzuki student model to replace it. And then, of course, he decided to switch to tenor. LOL

How long has your daughter been playing? This is EGK's 4th year in band, but second year on tenor.

6. SWEET! She started out on clarinet in 3rd grade and switched to alto in 7th. She's in 10th now.
She also has a really fine hand-made violin (from a local maker).

My middle daughter just did flute but she quit a few years ago. The eldest stuck with clarinet from the beginning. We got her a really high-quality wooden one when she was in 9th grade and she played through 12th. She's a sophomore in college now and I don't think she's touched it since graduating.

The sax still has all of the original pads. The only thing that's been replaced is the mouthpiece cork. It just likes being like it is and sings like no other sax I've ever played - and that's a fair number. It is good to hear my daughter playing it now but she still lets me have at it once in a while and it is one of those bicycle things - no conscious thought necessary.

7. Yeah, that cork definitely doesn't last forever. It was distintegrating on
that first sax we bought.

It must be cool to pick up that sax and play it again. Me, I have no musical ability whatsoever so I'll never experience that feeling for myself, but maybe EKG will someday down the road when it's his own kid who takes over the sax lessons.

9. Pretty darn good! Looks like a nice sax. Where's your son's face?
:P

Too bad we couldn't see him mouthing and fingering better - he's a pretty good player!

12. Thank you. I don't think I have been to a single concert yet where I sat
in the right place to see anything other than the sax and his little tapping foot. (This time I didn't make it as I was home with his sick younger brother, but clearly hubby didn't have any better luck picking out a seat. LOL)
